I'm going to order my valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, rod bearings and main bearings from RockAuto. They have the rod bearings listed individually for $7.58 ea., so you have to buy 6, but the main bearings are listed as $86.79 for 1. I'm assuming the mains come as a set of 6? This just seems odd that one would be a set and the others are sold individually. I want to make sure I order the right stuff. I know to order the std. size.

The mains don't include thrust washers, which I'm told are obsolete and to just reuse the ones I have.

Ok thanks. I saw those but was hesitant to buy there. I'd heard others say it took like 2 months to get their parts. I stopped by to talk to the guy yesterday and he's free one weekend toward the end of the month. I need to have all my parts in time. He's got a 4 post lift and air tools in his shop. I hope we can track down that noise and get it resolved so I can start spending $ getting the rest of the car where it needs to be. He said let's go ahead and do the main bearings as well while we're in there.

Don't waste your time or money on the main bearings, IMO. That's a lot more work than doing just the rod bearings.

I usually buy rod bearings from RCM.

I ordered the bearings from RCM (rod bearings kit only) and the valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, and Motorcraft plugs from RockAuto. The wires look to be in good shape, and I think the plugs are too, but I'm changing them anyway.

Question so I can explain to my "helper". What's the difference in the main bearings on these car and why do they not wear as much? His reason for replacing them is that they get more wear than the rod bearings do, which seems to be false for this car. Maybe it's different on others. I just want a SHO expert opinion to provide him so he doesn't think I'm stubborn.

The main bearing journals are where the crank is held in place. Unlike the connecting rods, they don't move around, they just go roundy-round; and they don't absorb the forces of combustion like the rods do. Main bearings are also about twice the thickness of rod bearings.

Main bearings should never get more wear than rod bearings -- your helper friend is confused...
