I have tried a couple of time to read the codes on my 'new' 93 MTX. The check engine light does work, it came on while driving a few days ago. I've checked the codes on my '90 several time without any problems. But this thing just won't spit them out.

The fan kicks on and the fuel pump primes, but nothing after that. My only idea is a bad computer, and I don't even want to think about that. This thing has enough problems.

Thanks!

I'm using the paper clip method. The car is not road ready, and the places that rent them out have a $250 deposit, that I don't have.

I found a cheap tester at AZ, $30-40, but works the same way as the dash light, a blinking light.

When I had problems pulling codes, I cleaned the "dog house" (OBD1) connector under the hood next to the passenger side strut tower.

I tried cleaning it, and nothing. Could it be a bad comp.? like I said, the light does come on, but it only came on once when I drove it. I started it up tuesday and let it run for about 15 minutes, and no light, but it won't read the codes either.

I just want to know what up with this thing!!!! AAHHHHHH!!!

3 year old gas smells bad by the way.:nut:

Turn key on and see if check engine light comes on right away. That is the bulb check to verify if the bulb is operational. If not replace bulb. If it does light up right away but still wont flash codes I would be looking into a new computer...

come to think of it, I don't think it does come on when the key is turned. I'll pull the air bag light out of the '90 and throw it in there. After 10 years of blinking, that light still works. (no airbag)

The bulb was the culprit, WTF?? Now I really feel like a genius. The bulb does light up though, I put it in the seatbelt spot, and it lights up. It aparently didn't have it's blink function.

I only got 114 and 116, but the battery has been disconnected about 15 times since it last ran, so there's bound to be more when I get it running again.
