Hope everyone is doing well.

The situation: 94 ATX, 124k miles. My car needs to be moved soon to a home garage 9 miles away so that I can begin the 60k and other preventative maintenance. Cant do any serious work where it sits now.

Two noises have me concerned, and I feel like they are bad rod bearings and the dreaded el crank cancer. The noises in the video are VERY noticable compared to in person. Just the way my phone is.

- Startup

- Noises 1 and 2. Watch segments at 1:00 - 1:10 and 3:25 - 3:30 for noise 1. Noise 2 starts at 6:00 when I pop the hood. I had to review the video because some clunking you hear is the subframe. (I have my work cut out for me huh? :bonk:)

Noise 1:

Cruising and acceleration under 2500 to 2000 rpm. Intermittent knocking at a somewhat fast rate. Sound comes and goes but is not present when on the throttle. This makes me think of rod bearings right away.

Car is only slow to start if you dont lightly tap the gas once. In the video I turned it over without hitting the gas to see if it was a really slow start. Started normal to me for a weak battery.

When I first got the car, I drove it back home 80 miles and experienced none of this but later that night I had a oil light come on and some clattering for about 2 seconds when the engine was kinda cold. Parked it immediately and it sat for 1 year. At the time I bought the car, the oil was thin and needed changed, so I figured it was the oil. Since then I have only driven the car recently with new fluids 10 miles, plus down the street for this video, and this clattering + oil light has not happened. (Shew)

Noise 2: light, somewhat high pitched grinding coming from passenger side of motor. It sounds awfully similar to a bad pulley. Present at idle and other rpm ranges. Fast tick/knock acompanies this but isnt as noticable in person and is not the same as noise 1.

Id like to drive it there but dont want to chance it. Id love to get a trailer and just haul it there but time is limited and Im stretched thin with my job right now. Given it may already have two serious but hopefully fixable issues it would be a shame to spin a bearing and ruin the car Ive waited so patiently to work on.

What are your thoughts on the videos? Do you think the distance or any distance is unsafe? Of course when I do get it there, first thing ill be checking are the crank and journals.

Thanks everyone.

I would drive it the 10 miles to the new home.

It would be a nice easy drive, but no lugging if there are hills.

It is really hard to tell from the sound in the videos just what is going on, but the fact there is no longer an oil light is a positive thing.

Others will disagree, but that is what I would do if I had no access to a truck and trailer.

I personally couldn't hear much besides what sounded like suspension clunking and early on a nice, crackling fire. I'd drive it too, just try to pick a time with the least start and stops.

Assuming your doing a full 60k you'll be able to eliminate crank cancer pretty quickly. But if it is crank cancer I have a spare key and sprocket I'll sell you.

Well I got the yamahammer there without any hiccups. I did hear the slight knocking when the engine would quickly drop below 2000rpm but it was never constant. Other than that the engine acted healthy.

You all will likely see me soon in the other forums

Thanks for the update. It is nice to see progress on an issue.

There is still some work to do to determine if rod bearings are the issue, so keep us posted.
