Welp, my brother pulled my plug wires to find the rear plugs drenched in oil. Guess I found my culprit for smoking lol. So what kind of process can my mechanic expect to replace the valve cover gaskets? How are the intakes to remove on the 3.0s?

Also where can I get some decent plug wires that are not to spendy? Mine pretty much fell apart, honestly surprised she didnt run worse than she did lol

also, some of us are able to change plugs without r/r the intake, depending on how the plug wires were run.

the oil must be removed from the top of the plugs before the plugs are pulled. paper towels or tampons are the most commonly used items for this part of the task.

I got a set of plug wires from Advance Auto called Xact for $50.00 about 4 years ago. No problems so far.

Years ago, I got as set of wires from Belden for full fare, and they were terrible. At night you could see the light show under the hood.
They replaced them with no issue, but the work to install was a big issue for me as I take the intake off.

If you're thinking that oil causes smoke out the tailpipe, you'd be wrong. If it somehow creeps out of the plugwell and then down onto a hot exhaust manifold, causing smoke IN the engine compartment, then you'd be spot on.

That oil in the plugwells is sucked in there by the vacuum created every time the engine cools down, OR pressured into the wells by a coked up or plugged up PCV system.

Oh, yea nothing from the tailpipe, just light smoke from the engine bay after driving. Assuming it leaks down to the manifolds and burns/smokes when the car gets to temp.

UPDATE
Well got plug wires, intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets coming monday. Spent 130ish dollars total, not bad imo. Got the gaskets on rockauto for 58, and ACDelco 9466A Professional wires on amazon for 73. Should run much better after this tuneup :)71 11i2BbkL SL1500

Time for Spark Plug Suggestions!

What should I get? Ideally something nice that would be available at a local parts store, thanks :)

Make sure they are coated on both the anode and the cathode since these are wasted spark systems. Half of the spark plugs are firing backwards and the coating tends to follow the spark. A single "P" at the end of the part number denotes platinum on just the center electrode. A "PP" denotes platinum on center electrode and ground electrode. I don't know what the double iridium part numbers would be.

Any idea where I can find d plat motorcrafts? I see them on shosource but its 15 dollar shipping. Anyone use autolite or ngk double platinums? With how rough she was running figure any double plat would be an improvement. Or should I just go iridium?

Autolite APP3924 plugs work great.
I have installed many sets without any problems.

My advance auto was kinda limiting, ended up getting the Denso Iridium IK16TT's, figured denso, motorcraft and autolite were all brands to consider

the iridium Motorcraft plugs are "-FM" and are iridium on both surfaces in my experience.

I am not a fan of Denso plugs in this application.

Before you install the new plugs, be sure to take good measurements of them side by side (preferably with a micrometer) to see if there are differences in plug height, plug reach, etc. This affects how well the plug wires seal to the plugs and how far the electrode is into the chamber, for instance. A difference of millimeters can be crucial.
