Well I've done a fair amount of searching and haven't really come up with a consensus of "normal" oil pressures for a healthy SHO at different RPM's. From what I gather the pressure on the SHO tends to run on the low side as compared to other vehicles. Thoughts?

The SHO does run pretty low oil pressure comparitively. Mine runs approximately 10 psi @ idle, and gains around 14 psi for every 1000 RPMs.

low idle pressures are very hard to determine due to gauge inaccuracy that low.

3k is a good rpm to really determine oil PSI

And 50PSI @ 3k is a good warm figure thumb

The pressure doesn't have to be that high on the SHO.

From what I understand, the passages are wide enough that the oil flows a lot better than on some other motors..

50psi @ 3k. Mine is way off from that. All warmed up I'm seeing 30psi @3k ,40psi @4k, and around 50psi @ redline. Idle is a bit lower than 10 on my gauge but it takes a lot to make the oil pressure light go on... like 500rpm stuff. I replaced my rod bearings at 100k a little while ago. They weren't too bad. I've had the valve covers off a number of times and everything seemed good and lubed up top. I do have an oil leak from where the oil pressure line attaches to it's fitting. The gauge is a really crappy cheapo brand. I've been meaning to save up for better ones so I can get rid of that leak. If I'm sure it's leaking there, I wonder what kind of effect it has on my readings?

I'm running about the same #s as you Hayden,, perhaps just a little bit better. Makes me feel a LOT better about mine; knowing that others are running about the same :thumb:

I hear ya. After I read this thread I went out driving around in a lower than normal gear on backroads. I got it up nice and warm, but not rush hour sitting still warm. What is the definition of warm? It's gotta be different than sitting still on a 90 degree day in rush hour traffic. That's seems like hot to me. The hotter your car gets, the thinner the oil becomes, hence the lower pressure. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Chris, Both the Vulcan and the SHO use low pressure, high volume systems, so it's natural for mechanics and car enthusiasts alike to raise their brow or franticly demand that the motor be shut off when they see the gauge. Nevermind that though; it's perfectly normal.

I also did not see 50psi at 3k on any of my cars. That is a cold number more likely. A good rule of thumb is around 10psi at idle and a 10psi increase for every 1000 rpm from there.
