Received my report today from module experts. Original PCM failed due to leaking capacitors, it's been repaired and shipped back to me with lifetime warranty. They could not find evidence of any external problems leading to failure. Might of just had bad luck with the used replacement I got, hard to tell. I did open up my used replacement PCM and the board components did not appear the same as my original (with the transistor anomalies.) The used replacement also still let the car run when it was in failure state which was different from the original's behavior. Seems to be just 2 failures caused by time / normal usage.

Either way - I replaced most of my ignition system due to the evidence of rust and corrosion on plugs, wires and coil pack. Needed to be done - hopefully these components can be ruled out if there's any future failures.

Good to hear they repaired it. Did they charge a lot to do the repair work?

Just an update - drove 1,500 miles this weekend in the SHO and she did great (outside of a weak fuel pump I changed in an O'Reilly's parking lot on the way back home). Even got a record 34 mpg when driving sanely. Knock on wood the PCM issue is fully resolved. Thanks for all the help guys!

Unfortunately not. Wasn't terrible to drop, came down real easy. Was 3/4 full tho so it was a bit on the heavy side. Shoutout to the awesome employees at the store, they came out and started helping me. Brought out any tools I didn't have on hand & a second jack for lowering tank. The guys were down on the ground laying under the car with me, I was amazed at how helpful they were. Couldn't have done it without them. Certainly was a trip the family and I won't forget!

o_O Wowsers, 34 MPG?? That's higher than I have ever gotten in non-SHO Taurus rentals which got ~32 MPG all freeway, and way way higher than I have ever gotten in my '92.
SHO typical: daily mixed driving 21-23
100% freeway like a trip, 65 MPH, 25-26
100% freeway, 78-83 MPH, 27 MPG(I think it's a torque curve thing). Repeated on several long trips, two way trips so the head/tailwinds pretty much averaged out.
100% freeway, 75-80 MPH, above 4000 feet elevation, as high as 28-29. Figure it's the lower air resistance.
None of these trips had more than 600 lb of passengers/luggage/racing gear.

Yeah - it was pretty easy driving running 55-60 for about half the tank since we were driving country backroads. 435 miles of confirmed GPS miles. Stuffed 12.75 gallons in (always can fit about a gallon more then when it initially clicks off, started trip with tank stuffed full and consequential fill up calculations were done the same).

My average mileage of the rest of the trip was running about 75-85 on the interstate and that was just a hair under 27 mpg. Not sure altitude but in the smoky mountains area in TN and Kentucky. Also ran 93 octane the entire trip from high traffic stations.

About 12 years ago I ran my first 93 MTX the same route and made my previous record of 33mpg. My first MTX had higher miles and wasn’t in as good shape as this one is. Was nice to see it got similar figures.
