Hello everyone,
Today I purchased a 2012 Taurus Sho with 60k miles, very excited, also pretty nervous. It’s had a stage 1 gearhead tune for about 30k miles if that’s relevant to my post. I’m smart enough to have not bought it as a daily driver, but catastropic engine failure is scary either way.
I have an appointment set up with a high level mechanic, they will be checking the PTU fluid, doing an oil change, and checking the diff fluid, is there any other preventative maintenance I should have done while it’s there?
The two big failure points from my research are the waterpump/timing chain and the turbos themselves. With the water pump, are there generally warning signs before complete failure, or is it just sudden? Is this something I should just bite the bullet on now to know it’s brand new? If not, what things should I look out for to know its on its last legs?
With the Turbos, I have the same question with the warning signs, I’ve read to let the car run for a few minutes in park after each drive, is this correct? I’ve also read that an oil catch can will help prevent turbo failure, is this correct? And are there any specific ones you reccomend?
If anyone has a maintenance schedule they keep for their SHO, whos avoided serious issues into high miles, please send it to me.
I budgeted 6k extra on top of the car purchase to dump into before upgradig downpipes, inter cooler, and tune. So any suggestions for bulletproofing I’d love to hear. Again, I do not plan on driving it often, but I do not plan on driving it gently easy when I do.
Thanks so much!
