Ok, so I went to taco bell today and parked, when I was done eating I went to go into reverse... nothing, tried slamming it, going slow, gave it a lil wiggle wiggle and still nothing. This is the first time that this has happend to me, ALL forward gears engage and disengage perfect without any grinding. What could be causing this to happen? I am going to look at it tommorow morning before I go to work, I'm just gonna have to drive my SEL...
Thanks for your input guys!

Perhaps a broken rod shifter boss on the tranny? But then I imagine you'd have a problem going into forward gears as well....not to mention a crap load of movement in the shifter....didja try going from third or fifth and back into reverse?

OK, I went and pulled the **** and boot off and everything looked ok from the top, so I went underneath and again everything looked ok, no loose rods, nothing is broken. I turned the rod with my hand all the way to the right and pushed into the tranny, nothing, something is wrong internally with the tranny, there has to be. What could this be guys?

Not at all, I just got dont looking at it. When I had jacked up the car I pushed the clutch all the way down and then put in in 1st the tires spun... the clutch isn't disengaging all of the way, so I'm hoping for the best that the clutch is the cluprit here. Although I'm definatly NO expert and there are many on this site, so more input would be greatly appriciated!

same thing happened to me.. then I parked my MTX and drove my ATX.. then the ATXs trans died, so I learned how to drive without using reverse :nut: after a month I was messing around in a parking lot and it went into reverse.. I was about to throw in a new trans also. I'm gonna go with superHO and say PP finger or TOB, my case was both.

If it was the clutch though, it should go into reverse when the car is off. Try going 5th to reverse a couple times (if you haven't already) to see if maybe the lockout is stuck somehow.

Don't know if this applies to the rod shifter cars, but on the older ones like my 1990 with the cable shifters, you sometimes have to start in third, then double-clutch it trucker style to get it in reverse. Mine does this about every 5th or 6th time I try to get it into reverse, and the above process always works.

Will it physically go into the reverse position and not engage? or will it just not even move into that position?
