I can't be the first to have this issue, but my search hasn't turned it up in the archives. This is a '95 MTX stock JBL system

At initial car start up, and then randomly and frequently, the CD player powers up to track 1 which cuts out the radio or the cassette, whichever is actually on. After 2 to 10 seconds it realizes nothing is there and flips back to whatever was playing. This will repeat sometimes within seconds then maybe go about a minute before repeating, then stop and act normally for maybe 20 minutes, then start the cycle all over again. It did initially this with no CD present so I got the bright idea to put in a CD. Nope - does the same thing and does not play the CD. While it "thinks" it's looking for track 1 it ignores the eject button. It will take input from the track forward reverse and show it is looking for track 2, 3, 4 or backwards to 99, 98 but otherwise nothing is happening except my blood pressure rising. I was able to extract that CD by pressing eject during one of the periods when the radio was playing. Apparently not a vibration thing as whacking on the front or side of the player makes no difference.

This may be a red herring, but the first time it did this was the very next start up after I used the cassette player in maybe a year. Our wonderful nanny state requires "hands free" cell phone use so I have a Bluetooth adapter with a mic that goes in the cassette player. I was expecting a call.

Any suggestions?

Are you married to a stock stereo setup? The quality of these was never very good. CD player especially prone to failing. My '14 f150 cd player is garbage as well. I would swap in an aftermarket unit unless I was worried about collector status. Even then I would shelve the stock one and put in an aftermarket

Yeah (sigh) looking for stock. This is insured as a collector car, limited to 2,500 miles/yr. This SHO’s always been garage kept, just turned 100K last month. Stock with mild some performance mods.

I wonder if there is a repair facility that can work on this? I see a few online but I have never sent anything out

Sorry, for not answering the question, but does an after market head unit affect collector value?
yes it can impact value, depending on the collector and their affiliation. for AACA it has to be bone stock which can include dealer available options. Basically how it left the dealer lot when new. They are the strictest 'normal' club I know of (see Mustang and Corvette below). The Gen 1 & 2 is eligible to participate in judged events. I have 2 (non SHO) cars that have scored 1st Juniors their first time entered. This SHO has some paint issues so might get 2nd or 3rd Junior as it sits.
If you watch Bring a Trailer auctions the peanut gallery and the real bidders are a bit more forgiving, but they generally detract for aftermarket electronics and wiring as many folks bugger that up. So if you're looking for a SHO as a potential collector generally it's best to have reversible mods and as much already stock as possible.
The most ferocious judging and valuation folks seem to be the C1 - C3 Corvette guys and Mustang crowd. You'd want all stock everything there, and even then the show judges can get really picky and annoying. I won't even go to Mustang shows with my '04 SVT Cobra, just cars and coffee or 'all Ford' shows.

I agree the factory stuff was weak beans at best and that was 30+ years ago!!
But I do find some repair places?
Ford OEM Dash Units

Here is their repair service and might be worth a shot?
Repair OEM Radio's

If you do get it fixed try to post back to the forum to help the next guy. Remember ALL of these units are way past their design lives at this point.

There are many other repair places and it will be a crap shoot as to who can actually repair them.

The CD clicking noise was always resolved by keeping a CD in the unit at all times. My '93 has 190,000 miles and I have been through a couple radios and CD players, but unfortunately there is no supply of good used radios any more they are too old. I now use my phone and a bluetooth speaker.

Personally if I cared about the resale value (I don't, my car will never be a good specimen), I'd roll with an aftermarket HU and then swap the stock in for shows.

Well, if you need a working original HU... geez that is going to get tough.
