Hi everyone. My 93 ATX has been running just fine until one morning recently when I start it up, put it in Reverse to pull out of the driveway - and nothing. I put it in Drive - nothing. I try all the other gears - nothing.

I've checked the cable that is connected from the shift lever to the top of the transmission case. It's intact and operating correctly, physically shifting the lever through the gears.

Here are the current engine codes just pulled:
KOEO:
111 - No faults detected
659 (memory) - High vehicle speed in park detected

KOER:
639 - Transmission Speed Sensor (TSS) circuit fault - insufficient input from TSS to PCM
225 - Knock sensor

I assume the ATX tranny is toast? Which is a damn shame as it only has just under 50,000 miles on it since I put in a rebuilt one.

Could I be overlooking anything that might cause this behavior, such as the 639 code above? Can the PCM shut down transmission activity even if the lever is in DRIVE or REVERSE?

Thanks,
Jim

if you put it in reverse and try to start the engine, does it start?

was it shifting funny at all prior to being "dead"?

was the cruise control working previously?

No, it doesn't start when in Reverse. (which is normal as far as my understanding)
No, not shifting funny or strange in any way prior to no longer shifting.
Cruise control hasn't worked in about 5 years.

Thanks.

ok, so not starting in reverse gives us a pretty good idea that the mlps is good, so we can rule that out.

the fact that it was shifting fine prior to becoming dead, even though the cruise didn't work suggests that the (possibly) bad vss was not a huge problem.

unfortunately, that leaves you with a 99.9% chance that something internal to the trans has died. the codes are somewhat confusing to me, but I would say there is a possibility of a bad differential or bad drive chain (I don't remember which shaft the tss is on).

Thanks for your input guys.

I was afraid it was an internal thingy. Everything I've researched indicates that a TSS failure will cause poor shifting, but I haven't seen reference to it causing NO shifting whatsoever.

'preciate it!
