Hey guys i recently purchased a toreador red 96 with 95K and not welded, soon to be welded as soon as i sell my other car, anyways i was lookin around on v8sho.com and thought that it said that all sho's had 150mph speedo gauges, is this true? If so how do i have a 120mph gauge, also i thought all 96's has the 6x9 sub in the back and mine doesn't is it suppose to? thanks guys, im a new to sho's ive always been into mustangs, i love my sho way better than any mustang i have owned.

All v8 shos have the 150 speedo and I always thought the 96 had that sub in the back. You are talking about the speaker that is suppose to be in the center in the back right in between two other speakers?

How do you have a 120mph gauge? Someone switched gauge clusters.

Yea its a 120 mph gauge, i don't know if someone switched it the cluster must have been in there a while, the title i got from the people said they got it at 70K and i have the service records to corispond with the miles it has now, thats weird i thought maybe it was like a special order thing or maybe an downgrade, and yes i was talking about the 6x9 sub that has the cut out in the back seat. That gauge really stumps me.

i just carfaxed it cause this has been puzzling me and everything looks ok so i dont know. i was also looking at some taurus's and sables on ebay to see if it could have been switched with any of those and the only 120mph gauge and dash i saw that red lined at 7rpms was a 97 sable.

The speedometer can be removed from the cluster as a seperate unit. I would say someone replaced the speedometer at some point with a 120mph speedo.

Yup, your car is now classified as TMU: "true mileage unknown".

Chances are, the car was a lease car at first and the lessee put lots of miles on over the 24K or 30K allowed for in the lease so they bought a SLO cluster and stuck it in there so they wouldn't have to pay the mileage overage surcharge.

WRT to the sub, it probably blew at one point, and it was taken out to replace it only to find that the factory replacement unit was a stupid price, and there aren't really any 6x9 open-air subs out there usable as an alternative so they just left nothing there.

Now just get your cams welded.

Oh, and the speedo dropping out over ~120mph is a '98 thing, so it wouldn't have applied to this '96.

Yeah, that's really not good advice. Waiting for ticking is like the doctor telling you that you have cancer, but you deciding to wait until you get really, really sick before doing anything about it.

Here's another 120 mph cluster in a SHO. My 99 when I bought it. I'm in the same boat as you with TMU.

woah it looks like the rpms and fuel sides are stock, but someone cut the speedo part out of an older taurus or sable. would the speedo even be right then?

Not CUT apart. The speedometer module simply unplugs/plugs into the cluster housing very easily. It can be replaced with a 150 mph in a matter of minutes. I would imagine one of three things happened either it was manufactured that way (Fords been known to run out of a part and just put whats lying around in a SHO), the 150 mph was replaced for mechanical reasons or last someone need to roll back the milage to sell it.

Yes it will be as accurate as the 150mph.

It was from Canada and was re imported to the states. My guess is it had a cluster that featured Km instead of Mph and was switched with a SLO speedo just so it would be easier to pass. Or something like that :)

If it was the Canadian version, I suspect you have hit on it, though the speedo face with KPH does also have MPH on it, just in the smaller, inside the track set in a different color. Having both makes the gauge face a lot more cluttered, but at this point I am so used to it that when I looked at the photo of the just MPH one above, I really felt something about it looked very wrong, and it took a while to figure out it was all that open space...

Unlimited Revs?

Hmmmm, looking at the picture of the instrument cluster, I noticed that there is not a "redline" on that tach. What's that all about?
