Lets talk Engine Oil

So I tried searching, but the forum search removes the word oil because it's "too short or common." I need to do an oil change, I think the engine has around 50k on it and I want to try to keep the deposits to a minimum. What's the best oil for these cars, in your opinion? Cost isn't an issue, I put 9k miles on it a year at most. I'd rather pay more and not have trouble down the line.

I've been curious about the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, but I've always just been a Mobil 1 guy personally. I step it up to 5w30 since I'm in the South, but otherwise I just still to my annual oil changes and let her eat...

I have pennzoil ultra in the car now. I will run 5k miles and send it in for testing and post results. I sent in my motul 300v ester core oil a few weeks ago with 5k miles on it for testing.

6 quarts of this in it now, i got it from amazon

Royal Purple HPS or XPR, with Amsoil as a close second..... Honestly I'd probably only go Amsoil if I was sponsored by them.... No real reason to otherwise.

Butt, be warned the Amsoil requires butt activities in a shed on a back road, while the Purple is next day delivery from Amazon and also in stock at most speed shops.

I no longer change my own oil. I have been a fan of Castrol Edge; it did great in my turbo Subaru. I do like Mobil 1, also, but my Subaru tended to eat that. I would suspect that all brand name synthetics in the weight ranges specificed by Ford will do a good job if you follow the oil change schedule specified by Ford.

I use Pennzoil ultra platinum all the time but once, that time I tried Mobil 1. Didn't notice any difference or did I send in any samples for analysis. I drive approximately 7k kms a year, mostly city and change it every 4 months. I guess I like the yellow jug.

I used to run RP, but ever since they got bought out I've been leery and heard a lot of stuff on BITOG about their quality being no better than store brands now, since they basically are.

My godfather is an amsoil dealer, I should see what I can get the Amsoil boosted for. I've heard good stuff about the Castrol as well.

Castrol Edge is for TGDI engines as well. I use it in my SHO.

This is literally one of those questions where if you ask 10 guys you will get 10 different answers.

I personally am a Mobil1 guy, but its not always the best choice depending on the engine. I also study what gets posted on bitog.com and find good results for Castrol Edge (especially their top flavor) and Pennzoil (although I have had some not so great personal experience with Pennzoil) and Motorcraft full synthetic is decent too. According to my reading of bitog, there is no justification for the added cost of Amsoil or Royal Purple. And curiously enough, the Walmart SuperTech gets very good results, especially if you do not run extended oil change intervals.

If you do choose to use Mobil1, get the high mileage variant - it has more seal conditioners. My experience is that the regular Mobil1 will allow the engine to develop leaks at various seals, while the high mileage Mobil1 does not.

Ford Motorcraft full synthetic. I was an oil snob for decades. Now.... don't care, as long as it's reasonable quality synth done every 5k miles. I don't over-think this stuff anymore.

Castrol Edge here too. Nothing but good Blackstone reports (minus the fuel...always) that say I could go longer. I do it at 3,000 which is achieved in under three months so it’s cheep enough to continue that trend.

Any synthetic that meets the mfr spec is going to be fine.

I did my own real life oil test on my new 89 SHO. It was over 10 years and 182k, with the pan being pulled at 200k, but the next owner, for a leak. Besides being clean inside, the rod bearings didn't even need changing.

Anyway, my current (non-Ford) DD specifies Pennzoil Ultra Plat 0W-40 as the recommended oil.

I used to shell out for Amzoil but I now use Castrol Edge at the recommendation of my mechanic friend. He's an ASE certified master mechanic and also a gearhead as well with a 10 second Eagle Talon. If it's good enough for him and his 20-25ish pounds of boost I figure its good enough for me. Doesn't hurt that you can usually find it in stock for a decent deal and any of the local chains. I usually change it out in the spring and fall with a Purolator boss filter.

On my SHO and my last few performance oriented cars I've been using Liqui Moly. Can't complain at all.

Heard good things about it being a great oil for turbo cars from a few people and my mechanic back in 2014ish and switched from Mobil1 back then with my old BMW and been using it ever since.

With my high mileage daily drivers (usually a V6 Camry lol) I've been using Pennzoil High Milage, my last Camry I got rid of at 200k and I know the next owner had it until 220k before he got rid of it, I only replaced the valve cover gasket on it @ around 170k. With my most recent one I've been using Pennzoil High Milage Synthetic for the last 35k, so far so good @ 130k
