I installed a rebuilt unit a couple of days ago and now the 1-2 shift is ******* my 1998 Sho. Is there a Linkage adjustment I need to do? The gear selector in the car is slightly off. Or should I try a different fluid other then the Mercon V?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Brian

I want the transmission to work right! :)
I bought the unit from Advance Auto and installed it myself. I guess I will have to find out if they installed a shift kit in the unit.
I did not think a shift kit, if there is one installed, would make the shift from 1-2 **** the car like that.

The gear indicator in the cabin isn't important, but making sure the TRS is properly sdjusted is. The TRS is the black sensor located on the gearshift stud on the tranny. Put the car in Neutral, pull the gearshift cable off and adjust the sensor so that the lines on the center ring and the main housing of the sensor line up.

Do you happen to have a diagram of what points I have to make sure are aligned?

And if these are off, will this cause the harsh shift?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

I can't help with the alignment but I doubt it would cause the shift issue.
The speed sensor that plugs into the tranny will however cause severe shifting...confirm that it is plugged in.

Is the speed sensor next to the side pan right above the axle ?

If so, this is plugged in. I am going to put it up on a lift in the morning and check the connector for corrosion or debris.

I think the TRS is real close to being aligned, because I can only start the car car in neutral or park.

Maybe I need to re-flush the transmission fluid with a better type?

It is only 1-2 that jerks while shifting.

Any and all help is appreciated. :hail:

Probably not. The easiest way to see if the TRS is off is by the backup lights. If you pop it into reverse and the lights come on without any giggling of the shifter it is on the mark.

A hard 1-2 shift may just be the way it's built. If you can hook up a data logger and see what the EPC pressure is when it shifts.

Put at least 1000-1500 miles on the tranny before judging shift quality. A fresh rebuild can be very hard to gauge, from too soft to too hard. It all depends on what was replaced during the rebuild, tolerances, etc.

Agree, drive it a little. However, I would still mention this to the store manager. If he keeps a little note aside, just in case...

The range sensor should not affect shift quaility unless it is bad. Chances are, if it starts in park and neutral it is on correctly. You have to check its function with a scan tool, or a volt meter. I only know how to do it with a scan tool.

Check you TPS also.

Lastly, good job on doing it yourself. If you would, please PM me what good old advance gets for a unit. I am curious.
