sometime in the next week. I have ordered the bearings and pan gasket set from ACME. $56 plus shipping for clevite bearings about 20 for the gasket set. These prices seem about right, arent they? I have to pay shipping on the bearings since they had to special order from someplace other than their warehouse.

Anyway, while I'm in there are there any other things I should look at/replace? Also, if anybody out there has a helms manual they might let go for reasonable dollars, I might be interested. Don't mind if it's a little greasy, I just hate having to spend $90 on something I'll crap up anyway.

Pete,

Don't forget the oil pan gasket and some RTV. Also, pick up some plastigauge to check the tolerance of the new bearings on the rod journals. You don't want to get an undersized bearing in there if some goon made a stocking mistake.

You may consider picking up a couple extra exhaust studs for where the Y-pipe meets the manifolds if they've never been off. I broke two of mine doing the bearings - they're special order but SHOnut has them.

NAPA sells the clevite rod bearing (standard sizes) set CB1435P for $42.

AutoZone sells the Fel-Pro oil pan gasket set (front and rear) with a small tube of RTV for $17.

I'm doing mine Friday. Hope I don't break any studs as I don't have any extra :^(

John, you got any extras you could send me?!?

The oil pump pick up tube has to come off, so you'll need a new gasket for the tube to pump area. These are obsolete, so you can cut your own, or use a graphite EGR gasket as a replacement.

I have a 1994 and a 1995 factory repair manual. The '94 is in perfect shape, looks brand new. The '95 is the same, except the cover has a few creases. $65 each. Email me if you are interested.

Actually after breaking one on the front manifold, I had to remove the manifold, EZOut the stud and replace it - so I just did all four (with the rear manifold in place), with some anti-seize in there for good measure. So I don't have any extras.

Best of luck - my advice would be to use lots of penetrating fluid for the few days before you want to do the bearings. Then carefully back out the nuts, keeping them cool with penetrating fluid during the process.

That way you can use a thread chaser or a die to clean up the stud threads before reinstallation.

Steve,

I called NAPA and they couldn't get it. ACME doesn't have it either, but, they called clevite directly. I have been very happy with ACME about getting hard to find stuff.

So I'll need the bearings, oil pan gasket, and oil tube to pump gasket. Anything else?
Here is a very good procedure write-up for doing the Rod Bearings. I plan to do mine this week as a precaution, so we'll see how badly they are worn at 89K :D Good Luck!

the kurtmetros site is outstanding. I used it.

So, Auto, did you do your bearings yet? How'd they look? I had a little copper showing onthe top sides only. I think they looked pretty good for 90k. I still have the annoying rod knock for a second on cold start-up. Do you have this problem. Next, I think I am going to try something other than a mobil 1 filter. Some filters havwe a check valve to keep the oil in the top of the motor. I am guessing that the M1 doesn't, or atleastit's not working too well. I am using castrol 10-30, BTW.
As for the pickup gasket, when I took the pickup tube off, the old gasket came with it in perfect shape.I just wiped it clean, smeared a small amount of gasket sealant on it and reinstalled it.
