I have a 98 with 112,000 miles and no welds. After my spring semester ends I'm gonna take a trip up to NESHO. I've told several people about the failure of the cams and articles and reports from everyone on V8SHO.com, although no one I know really cares. I've been saving up for awhile, and as a college student working full time and paying for school, its hard to save enough money and have the time to take a 3-4 hour trip out of Jersey.

I was in the same boat: college kid with no extra cash. I finally saved up enough and did mine last week, you feel allot better afterwards even though it sux to drop the money. I pouted over it for a little while and then was just happy to be done. The trip outta Jersey wont be that bad. Im pretty sure your going to take the same route I did to go home to southern NY, once you hit NY its a total of 2 roads and they are both big highway.

My car got to like 110k miles or something like that when they were welded. Then at 113k it suffered catostrophic engine failure.

Well thanx for the upbeat addition to what was an overly optimistic thread!! j/k ;)

that sucks though, was it the cams that failed after the welding was done? if so, who did the work if you dont mind my asking? I think ppl should know who has "fixed" the cars that have broken after the fact.

That's not exactly an exhaustive list. For one, Eric Lehmann does quite a lot of cam welding.

Visit www.V8SHO.com for a more complete list. Though, I wouldn't consider that list infallible, either.

those are the only 2 I knew of.. and I just learned about Kirk in the last 6 months.... Doug did mine and welded them all the way around but I hear he doesnt do alot with SHO's anymore.

I'm almost positive its because a piston ring came apart. The compression was low in just 1 cyclinder and the sparkplug when it was taken out looked like it got the shit beat out of it. The engine is almost apart but I just found another engine with 80k on it that I am getting since it will be easier to replace. The welds on my cams still appear to be in good shape, none of them are broke, crack or twisted.

Maybe weld splatter got into the engine and got to the bearing or ring. Was it covered well when welding?

180,000 miles without a weld....

I should have it done, but, at this point, everything else on the car is pretty well worn. It would need alot of work to get it where I want it, so I have been stashing money away for a newer car. I paid $7800 for the car 6 years and 120,000 miles ago. If it gives out tomorrow, I have gotten my moneys worth. It has been a great car, but I am ready for something with the drivewheels on the right end. If it makes it to 200,000, I'll get them welded when I do the next 100,000 mi service.

In the last 4 months the wife has taken 3 road trips no less than 2000miles each. With out the cam welds I would have been swetting bullits. With it she can take it when ever she wants.
