A friend of mine had a green 95 sho, 5 speed, 70,000 miles. He had almost everything replaced when he first got it, including water pump, the sensor underneath of it, timing belt, even had the "squeaks" in his front suspension fixed. OH yeah, also, flowmaster exhaust. Well a month ago, he traded it in for a cougar because his oil light, the red one, in the bottom left corner of the gauge cluster stayed on. Mine usually flickers on if my car is about to die whenever I don't give it enough gas (mine is a 5 speed also), But someone he worked with told him that that meant the oil pump is about to go out, which, he drove a neon, and just got a new engine put in because of that. He didn't really check around, he just heard that is what it meant and that no one makes oil pumps for the SHO anymore and its not worth trying to save. Does anyone have a solution for that? Or know if any of that is true, or possibly what it really could have been. He did drive it really hard, but so do I and mine never did anything like that, plus mine hasn't even had a tune up yet (i know thats bad, its going to be done...) If i didn't say something clear, just ask, cuz sometimes I don't really say things clear.

Worn rod bearings cause that, along with light-viscosity oil. With only 70k on it I'd say your friend drove the &#%$ out of it...

Edit: I shoulda read that a little closer. If it was on all the time and the engine wasn't making a ton of bad noises, then his sender went bad.

Either that, or it was just about out of oil. Did he ever check the oil level?

The low oil level light is yellow, not red, as far as I know.

It could have been just the sensor. Was it on all the time even when the engine was cold? If so it was most likly just the pressure sensor.

he did check the oil levels, the oil level light is yellow, but it never made noises under the hood, it just came on after he drove it for a little bit and stayed on. But when he first started it, it wasn't on until it warmed up. Someone around town has already bought it. Is it true that they don't make oil pumps for these cars anymore, like that guy said, or is it even possible to fix?

It is true that the oil pumps have been discontinued. One should be able to find a used one in decent shape from a parts car. Not the ideal situation but it should work fine.

I would check the other components mentioned as well. Bad oil flow is something to be concerned with. It could only be a bad sensor or it could be the pump or bearings. Tough to tell offhand.

Yeah it is, but if you don't have oil you're not going to have oil pressure either.

Edit: I've seen the oil pressure light come on during turns and such without the low level light ever coming on. The pump will try to pick up oil when there's none there and the light will come on due to lack of pressure.

if the pan is kept full or nearly full the baffle in the pan should keep the pickup tube submerged in oil in any turn. I've never seen mine come on in a corner but I suppose it is possible, especially if running a light viscosity oil and/or the car is fully warmed up and the oil has thinned out a little. The other thought may be something to do with fuel dilution of the oil, if the car was running really really rich, it could be washing past the rings and into the oil, thinning it past the 5w-30 level. Most likely it's not an issue with his oilpump itself, the presure reliefe spring on it perhaps is failing allowing the valve to open up and dump the freshly pumped oil to flow right back into the pan rather than into the oil passage ways then to the filter. The pressure sender sounds like the likely culprit though, first and foremost cause it is a 10 min change, including jacking time if you hit it from below.

Do a search on SDPATT's idle reset proceedure here on the forum, do that on your car, and that might help a little with possibly not giving your own car enough gas now and then where it almost stalls and gives you the oil light. I found that after reseting my idle following that proceedure made my car less likely to stall if I happened to bog it down like manuvering in a parking lot or something accidently.

I have a new in box 3.0L oil pump. I'm not pushing to sell it, but everything's available for the right price.

Best of luck with the SHO.
