I have a '95, and it appears I threw the same code, 542 for me (fuel pump secondary circut failure). What would the process be for me to find the actual problem?

If your engine starts and runs normally, ignore the 542. It, along with a 543, are often set when the engine is stalled.

If the fuel pump does not run at all, then the circuit will need diagnosis.

well, the car starts and runs, but not normally. its fine up until just over 3k rpm, then it gets real sluggish and generally i can't get it over 5k rpm. I had been told that the fuel pump secondaries come on around 3200 rpm, which would mean there was something going on there. The damnedest thing was about a week ago, coming home from work, a few miles from my house, the connection to my maf came loose so the check engine light came on, idle rolled, but the car drove like it was supposed to, no sluggishness or anything. my only thought on this was that when the car cant measure the air coming in, it assumes it is at the max, and therefore the fuel pump goes full force. (maybe?)

Thanx, I'll look into that too. It occurred to me, that it might be related to my SPOUT, I'm getting a code 219, which is 'SPOUT signal defaulted to 10 degrees BTDC/SPOUT circut open'. I'm headed out there in a few min to find the SPOUT and see what's up with it.
