DTC 659 Diagnostic from 95 Service CD
Pre-Test information:
INTRODUCTION
Note
You should enter this Pinpoint Test only when you have been directed here from Diagnostic Routines, Section 2A.
Remember
To prevent the replacement of good components, be aware that the following non-EEC areas may be at fault:
l Other aftermarket modifications
l Incorrect transmission fluid level
l Transmission operating temperature
l Engine operating temperature
l Ambient temperature
l Faulty connections
l Engine Sensors (e.*. TP Sensor)
The transmission solenoids and the Transmission Range (TR) sensor are not analyzed in this Pinpoint Test, but are analyzed in Group 07 in the Service Manual.
This Pinpoint test is intended to diagnose only the following:
l Harness Circuits: CCS, SS1, SS2, SS3, EPC, TCC, TFT, TR and 3-2/CCS, SS3/4-4/3
l Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (12A650)
PINPOINT TEST
TG90 PERFORM DRIVE CYCLE TEST
l Run Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and record all Continuous Memory DTCs displayed.
l Clear Continuous Memory (refer to Quick Test Appendix, «Section 5A»).
NOTE:
Obey all traffic laws.

l 4R55E, 4R70W, AODE, CD4E, E4OD and AX4S-3.2L SHO Drive Cycle:
-- Gear position in DRIVE range, press the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) (the Transmission Control Indicator (TCIL) should light) and moderately accelerate from stop to 40 mph. This will allow the transmission to shift into third gear. Hold speed and throttle opening steady for a minimum of 15 seconds (30 seconds for altitudes above 4000 feet).
-- Press TCS (the TCIL should turn off) and accelerate from 40 mph to 50 mph. This will allow the transmission to shift into fourth gear. Hold speed and throttle steady for a minimum of 15 seconds.
-- With transmission in fourth gear and maintaining steady speed and throttle opening, lightly apply and release brake (to operate stop lamps). Then hold speed and throttle steady for at least an additional five seconds.
-- Brake to a stop and remain stopped for a minimum of 20 seconds with transmission in drive. Repeat drive cycle at least five times.
l Rerun KOEO Self-Test and record all Continuous Memory DTCs.
-- Are pass codes present in Continuous Memory (any code 111)?
Yes
Unable to duplicate fault at this time. For further diagnosis using EEC-IV Monitor Box or Scan Tool, REFER to «Section 7A», EEC-IV Monitor Box: Intermittent Fault Diagnosis. If further diagnosis is not performed, then CLEAR Continuous Memory (REFER to Quick Test Appendix, «Section 5A») and REFER to Group 07 in the Service Manual for possible internal transmission damage.
No
For DTCs 624, 651 or 634:
GO to «TG91»
For DTCs 452:
GO to Pinpoint Test Step «DS1» (E/F Series Bronco) or GO to «DP1» (for all other vehicles).
For DTCs 659, 667, 668 and 675:
GO to «TG93».
For any other DTC:
GO to «TG92».
TG93
TG93 CHECK FOR DTC 659
DTC 659 indicates high vehicle speed detected while the vehicle was in PARK.
Possible causes:
-- Damaged Transmission Range (TR) Sensor.
-- Damaged PCM.
l Did DTC 659 repeat during the drive cycle test?
Yes
GO to «TG103».
No
GO to «TG94».
TG103 CHECK TR SENSOR RESISTANCE
l Key off.
l Connect TR sensor.
l Breakout box installed, PCM disconnected.
l Unlock steering column.
l Measure resistance between Test Pin 30 and Test Pin 46 at the breakout box in each gear selector position. Refer to the TR sensor resistance specification table below:
³ Transmission ³ Minimum ³ Maximum ³
³ Range Selector Lever ³ (ohms) ³ (ohms) ³
³ Position ³ ³ ³
³ Park ³ 3770 ³ 4607 ³
³ Reverse ³ 1304 ³ 1593 ³
³ Neutral ³ 660 ³ 807 ³
³ Overdrive ³ 361 ³ 442 ³
³ 2/Drive* ³ 190 ³ 232 ³
³ First ³ 78 ³ 95 ³
* Drive for AX4S/AX4N except SHO applications
l Is each resistance within specification?
Yes
REPLACE the PCM. REMOVE the breakout box. RERUN «Quick Test».
No
REPLACE TR sensor. REMOVE breakout box. RERUN «Quick Test».
If your testing requires a different diagnostic routine, let me know and I will post it.
