Changed the rod bearings on my poor old '93 today. Three of the cylinders had bearings with no copper showing. Cylinder 4 had just a bit, maybe a 1/2" of copper visible. Cylinder 6 had the copper literally flaking off and Cylinder 5 the top bearing came out in two pieces with the copper flaking off of it too. It had not spun.

Anyone else have any broken bearings?

What is your mileage, and oil history? Sounds like it has had some long overdue oil changes, and hard driving, not that hard driving is bad wink

yes the car has a checkered past. There is about 150k on the motor. I have had it for 2 years and put on the last 12k. I found some oil change records that were in the neighborhood of 7500 miles and Pennzoil. :( eek!

Was this a maintenance thing on your part or did you notice possible bearing problems while running? I wonder if near failure of the one helped wear the others. Did you notice any crank damage/markings?

Mr Nunnally mentioned that an early sign of rod bearing failure was a knock when not under power, neither accelerating or deceleration. Apex of the power curve he said. And I noticed a slight knock on a warm engine at idle but definitely when at 3k rpms or so and off power.

There was no damage to the crank.

Not quite but when I pulled the oil pan off it looked like I had been panning for gold with all the flakes in the bottom.
