Due to some recent confusion with the rod bearings that were installed in my SHO I am looking to get as much data as possible on the original bearings in order to help myself and any others later presented with this problem. If you have your old bearings, there should be a small set of numbers and letters, such as D4D, D4H, D3A, etc. printed on them. I am curious to know the following:

1. Year of ENGINE & bore (3.0 or 3.2)
2. Bearing numbers (breakdown if all do not match)

With this data, I hope to conclude whether the numbers are sizes, date codes, or some other type of marking. Thanks for your help! thumb

I don't have a used set of bearings handy at the moment, but I do have a few sets of genuine Ford E9DZ-6211-A standard size bearings, and they are all stamped D2B.

Ok, '95 ATX 3.2

My numbering is #6 being the rod closest to the crank, and # 1 closest to the fly.

#6-D4D
5-D4G
4-D4G
3-D4G
2-D4G
1-D4D

As a note I found that #1 and #6 uppers were most worn out of the group. Let us know what you find.

I only saved one old bearing off of cylinder #5 because it was the worst and it is a D4D.

My bearings are as follows:

'95 3.0

FW D4D, then D4H the rest of the way across.

I have pictures if I could get someone to host them.

Finally, did you guys replace all of them with STD size bearings and how is the engine holding up?

D3A on all cylinders.

EDIT: I figured it out!!! The middle number is the YEAR and the last letter is the MONTH!!! The car build date provided will prove my point.

The 89 SHO had 9C which means, 3-89....I bet his build date is after that. Mine was 3A which is 1-93 and my buiild date is 5/93. Make sense? You have 4H which is 8-94, so I'm assuming you have an early 95 SHO? And Rockledge would have a late 94 SHO with his 4-94 bearings, correct?

Well I agree with the theory. Heres the thing though. The ones I just changed out of my 91 mtx are 4 D5B's and 2 D5A's. The car only has 105,000 on it. Is it possible that these were replaced sometime ago?

WOW... you seem to have hit the nail right on the head... I can't believe it! That is amazing! My car is indeed a early '95, the build date of the car itself is in December of '94 if I recall properly. This must be an indicator of the actual engine build date, which seems to suggest that for whatever reason my engine is a freak case (unless the bearings themselves were just made in those months and I happened to get an earlier D that was laying around or something... it sure doesn't seem impossible, and that explains why most of the other folks have all the same numbers. Way to Go!!!

BTW: I just realized that the D probably stands for Date. Then the year digit and the month (A-L).

I'd think so or it had a motor swap...spun bearing!
