'92 MTX. I just replaced my cam sensor last week and it has been running like a charm. Cleared up my knocking and hard start after shutdown. Today I went to start and it almost sounded like it tried to backfire, then kind of wheezed on cranking a few secs and no start. Did a "WTF" and tried again and had to pump/floor the pedal like the old start after shutdown routine. Finally started and had what seemed like a lot of smoke initially. After that it seemed to run fine again, and had no problems with hot starting either. I don't have a check engine light or anything. Can you get codes during cranking?

Could this be related to the cam sensor, or other problem rising up to bite me?

Make sure you have good electrical connections for everything that runs through the DIS. What condition are your plugs and plug wires in? Was the smoke you mentioned black (as in rich). It sounds like you had a flooded condition while trying to start it. Check your idle air bypass, air filter, and anything else that may be restricting air flow.

I don't think the smoke was super black, it was either blueish or whiteish. I don't think I've got a gasket problem as neither the oil or coolant appears fouled. I guess it's possible I may have had a flooded problem as my kids get in the car from time to time, and I also was going to let my friend drive it due to rain (he has a pickup). I think he got in and started to adjust stuff, but the rain stopped and he didn't take it.

It hasn't happened since, so maybe they stood on the gas without starting it by mistake?

Doesn't do anything on fuel injected cars. Carbs, OTOH.....

You might have had an injector stick open and a single cylinder was drenched in fuel. Check your crankcase oil for fuel contamination.
