Ok,

I finsihsed the upper 60k tonight.

I did take the intake apart and clean in and let it dry overnight before putting it back together.

Got everything back together today and quadruple checked to see if anything was missing.

The car turned over and over I then gave it gas and it did start.

It wont stay running once I let off the gas.

If I dont touch the gas it hits around 500 rpms while its cranking. Once its started (with me holding it around 2k rpms) its sounds really smooth.

I have searched 17 pages of stuff and just went out and double checked my grounds and plug firing order, plug tightness and looked again at all wiring harnesses and all seem to be connected.

Any ideas? Is there a way I can pull codes? I wouldnt think it would be a ground problem since it does indeed start...

The one thing I do know is that my EGR gasket ( the car is a 93 ATX with only 61k on it) isnt in the best shape but I wanted to get it running tonight for work and used a liqued gasket.

When it is running if I bring the RPms up to say 4500+ it stumbles a little.

Any ideas at all?

The shims were all within spec and perfect except two there were 4 others I changed as they were at the high end of spec. and agin it idles smooth at 2k when I start it but if I let off at all it stalls.

Could some intake cleaner be in the vaccum lines or something somehow? I cant imagine what the heck is going on.

It sounds as if you didn't plug the idle air bypass valve back in, pinched it's cable, or have a serious vacuum leak somewhere. Did you replace the intake gaskets? Can you verify that the IAB is indeed plugged in?

Like Mikey said, it's very likely the IAB. Look at my guide and make sure you got it it, it likes to get caught under the intake manifold.

To be honest the IAb is plugged in. There is no vaccum line that runs to it just a power clip or whatever.

I will take it off and make sure no berrymans got into it.

It pulls the air from in front of the TB throttle plate right? Maybe something is in the way of its air passage?

I will check these things tonight and if I have to pull the codes.

I had the sounding problem when I did some work on the top a while ago. Car ran perfectly, but if I let off the gas it would die. I realized, after much sniffing around and checking for vacuum leaks and the like, that I had put the throttle body gasket on in a reversed position - blocking the port for the IAB and causing the car to act just as you described. Dumb mistake - can happen (as I proved).

Good luck.

Did you replace the intake-to-head gaskets? These are just a metal gasket with a rubberized coating that can sometimes chip off and cause a vacuum leak. Make sure you have the intake clamps tight.

Intake clamps tight. and even though my intake gaskets looked great where they sealed I decided to install new ones anyways. I tried to be as cautios as possible but with the TB gasket I just put it on and didnt even look....
