hey, here is what i have been trying to figure out for a while now. I bought a 93 atx with 106 K on the clock and it didn't run. With some cleaning of filters i got the car running but it was a very hard start. Now every time when i start the car it dies after 3 sec. unless i hold the throttle at about 2500 rpm it will not run. I had some codes at the begining ( coolant temp.) which i replaced and i don't have the CEL on any more. I have tried the mass airflow sensor that did not do anything, also the idle air valve did not change anything. Now i don't know what to try next. Please if anybody has any ideas reply, i really would appriciate anything. thanks

p.s. my 94 atx had almost the same symptoms when i had trouble with my timing belt which slipped couple of teeth, so i am not sure if that could be it.

there maybe be more then one problem but if it has hard starts and you have to hold the throttle to keep it running id say a vaccume leak. It's just a guess ,but gives you something to think about especially if you hear a sort of hissing when its running.

Your IAC valve (which is a metered vacuum leak) isn't working.

Try cleaning it, be prepared to replace it.

tranny issues could be the VSS. easier and cheaper than a whole tranny.

how old is the fuel in this car? it may not want to burn if it's old. could be the fuel pump also.

get it running for a good while, possibly drive it around a lil and then pull the codes again.

well i changed the IAC valve ( from my 94) and it didn't do anything, that was before i cleaned the intake, i guess i should try it again and i don't think this one is bad b/c the 94 is running fine. I know that the pump is working fine it is making a strong noise and the fuel pressure is fine i checked it.

thanks for the offer SHO'd if i find that IAC is bad i am goining to get a new one, it shouldn't be much with my advance auto employee discount

the car has been sitting in my garage for about 2 months and i know i added about 4 gal last time b/c it was empty when i bought it.

you guys think that it could be caused by timing, b/c i had some trouble with my 94 sho and it didn't want to start right and it didn't want to run and all that was caused by the timing belt which sliped coulpe of teeth.

here is another thing i found out, everytime after i try to start the car and crank it for a while without luck, the plugs seem to have some oil on them, now i am not sure if thats from the valve covers or from inside the engine. I think that it could be from inside and thats why i can't get it enough spark to start it. I know when i got the car it did not have any oil around the plugs and the gaskets seemed to be fine. SO if anyone can elaborate on that i would appriaciate. thanks

p.s i had the car running today for 10 min. at about 1500rpm it got to the normal temp. but as soon as let the gas pedal go it died and wouldn't start after that.
