My manual specifies 5W-20, but part number is 5w-30, and cap is 5w-30. I'm thinking the 5w-30 is the correct oil. Guess someone missed in the copy/paste/QA process.
I'd have to look at my 2018 manual, but if memory serves...only the Eco-Boost engines are 5-30, the others use 5-20. I found the manual to be a bit confusing as there are multiple pages of similar info...but related to the different engines.
I believe 2010-12 EcoBoost was 5w-20 and Ford changed it to 5w-30 for the 2013+ EcoBoost. I run 5w-30 in the summer months and drop to 5w-20 in the winter months in my '12 MKS.
Ford switched the front wheel drive 3.5 ecoboost to 5w30 when the trucks launched the rear wheel drive 3.5 ecoboost. It was done just to make them common so that dealers didn't put the wrong oil in the trucks .
You can run either viscosity in the front wheel drive 3.5 ecoboost. Synthetic .
It is hard to know what running changes were made in production along with the oil recommendation, especially with the 2013+. Use what it says on the oil cap, but if you want to switch from 5W20 to 5W30, do a Blackstone Labs analysis on both oils and see for yourself if it makes a noticeable difference. Key will always be not overextending OCIs.
