I have a 92 w/jbl sound system. Looking in my trunk there's the black box which I know is an amp, but what's the silver box mounted left of it? I'm guessing one powers speakers, the other powers the sub, but is this right? If I set up the bypass, which one do I bypass? And also, how am I supposed to get out the rear speakers?

The silver one is for your speakers. The black one is for your sub. As far as bypassing, I do not know. I'm still using my factory amp for the time being. You would be bypassing the silver one, yes, but my SHO was born without JBL sound.

Edit: you remove the speaker grilles with a knife or other thin object. They pressure fit down into the package shelf. Be gentle and try not to bend them too much. After that, a short screwdriver or a socket will suffice.

Dave's right. When I installed my aftermarket HU, I bypassed the speaker amp with the bypass harness. As far as I know, this eliminates the sub all together, so you don't have to worry about bypassing that amp, too. The stock speakers (if you still use them) will run off the new HU and, in my case, sound a **** of a lot better.

On rear speaker sidenote, if you want them for decent midbass (fill reasons), I'd suggest an aftermarket pair. Once you remove the stock ones, you will see why I say that: The magnets on the stock JBLs are about the size of quarters.

On my 91, i think I have it figured out that the black one powers the spekers and the silver one powers the subs. thumbs_u

You can bypass the amp with the bypass harness like stated. Deffinatley worth it when you have a headunit that probably puts out more watts than that amp.. thumb

on mine, it's the silver one that powers the sub, not the black one. at least, that's the one that was removed when i put in my own subs/amplifier.

I have the JBL audio system, and four speakers in my rear deck...two 5x7s and two 6x8s. The 6x8s are held in place by big rubber straps and, for factory speakers, have pretty hefty magnets on 'em. The 5x7s' magnets, IIRC, aren't as beefy, but are bigger than the puny little stockers in the rear deck of my mom's '98 Sable, which I think are the size of quarters.

I like my front speakers, though. Just need some tweeters up front to help them with highs, though (got 4 sets in the garage :D ).
