any updated pics of this project???

The car is gutted and is getting the cage this weekend. I will post pictures of the cage in process and when finished. We also need to fab the seat mount, window nets, harnesses, etc, but we are getting close.

Stay tuned.

Geez, that rear seat and passenger seatback are better than my '89s

We saved the rear seat (OK condition) and passenger seat. Any money we get for selling them can be used to decrease our spend on the $500 limit. The car actally had an ok back seat, good door panels, good cladding and nice bumpers. We are pulling any good parts we can to sell and I am putting cracked and damaged parts back on since they will get rough service anyway.

If you need anything, let us know.

Thanks for the help and the preview Kerry.

I got home at 8pm tonight, but the cage is done. We ran into a few issues like forgetting to close the doors before welding in the door bars. The door handle hit dead on, so we will be gutting out the door to make it easier to open it from the inside.

I also was reminded that the GI SHO had no headlight bulbs for some reason (just as I was ready to leave). Luckily, Dave had a set of 9004 bulbs from somewhere, and he had no cars they fit. Then it was the headlight switch that needs to be wiggled to work, and the lack of any dash lights.

That said, the car is a blast to drive. It is light and very tight. It handles very well for old street tires, and the engine seems to still have plenty of pep at 240K.

Here are my pictures of the build

And I will attempt to post a photo, but I have not figured out the link thing yet.

This cage was a 2 day "down and dirty" model to keep us all safe. Dave took measurements and ideas for improvements, so a nice cage kit is coming for the rest of us. More news in a separate thread on the cage group buy.

Now to pack all the spare parts we can think of, and paint the car in camoflage for the GI SHO effect.

Nice welds on the cage!

Glad to hear the car can still throw down after all the years. Should make for an interesting LeMons.

Mike, do you know what the situation will be like as far as the pit crew? I just don't want to have to sit by myself (or just with my Dad), not being able to chat with the crew of the car. Will I need to get the pit pass?

The car looks great by the way. If you end up selling copies of that cage, I may be interested in getting one in the future.

I have never been to one of these events before, so I don't know how tight they are on pit passes. I am not driving myself, so I paid $75 for a "pit crew" slot. For the $75, I get all the freebies the driver's get (shirt, etc), just no driving time. They also talk about a $40 spectator pass, but I don't know if they are going to be super strict on the pits.

From my standpoint, I welcome you to our pits. I have an enclosed trailer, tent canopies, etc, so you are welcome to stay with us in the pits. If you want to make it 100%, you can pay the $75 each like I did, and they can't say anything. I have one last chance to add to my pit crew list this week, so PM me or email, and we can plan off list.

It would be cool to have you guys there.

No kidding! Don't paint the cage, those welds are too pretty to hide.

;)

He does have some of the nicest looking welds I have ever seen. You should see Karen's RX7. It has lots of custom bends to give extra room in the door bars, and all the welds are beautiful.

ahhhh, now there is a good sight.

A nice smooth bead laid down by someone who knows how to properly set up a good quality machine and has a very steady hand...

My on track mileage nearly doubled (constant WOT running) in back to back testing of a stock fuel map, and one set to 13:0 at WOT. Reckon you could stick a tweecer box on the EEC for just the race?

You probably wouldn't want to put a Tweecer on for the race. The race officials can opt to buy any car at the event for $500, which is the cost of a Tweecer all by itself.

I'm slammed on the new house through Jan, but if I had time and an invite, I'd be there.

I'll be there cheering on the SHO track brethren in spirit.

I see they have a summer '08 SC event...
