Removed the spare tire, floor mats, back seat and head rests. 3/8 tank of tank gas. I still get either some wheel or tire spin on the second shift. Going to the local track tomorrow which might only be an 1/8 mile track

Nice run!! Good luck at the track!! You have trans mounts right? It’s not lowered yet though? Just thinking about your wheel spin 1-2.

8087C521 6F05 4144 B7C7 56ECE5F750F0 Made it to the track today, it was a bit of an odd day from the start!

This morning none of the gas stations in my town had E-85 OR 93!!! I had to go to maybe 10 stations in the county and I found 93 at a Valero and E85 at a Sunoco a couple towns over.

Off to track for the first time with the goal learning how everything works and getting a good feel for it. The track is pretty rough, short, full of gravel, and worst of all they dump a gallon or two of water on each lane before every run. Their was no space to go around it, it totally sucked. As the day went on the amount of water saturation increased. They would have me sit in this gritty water sludge while the person in front of me made their run.

I Took out the backseats and gutted everything but the sound deadening and carpet in the trunk. Front tires were at 25 psi. First past pass was 11.92 with traction control off and 30 miles to empty. Second pass I was at 26 empty and was my best pass at 11.79 - these passes were at E-40. I ran a few more passes then took the wife and kids to get some lunch.

While eating some Chi-fil-A I shared my results with @802SHO and he suggested trying 30 psi on the Nitto’s. I got back and put 3.5 gallons of fuel in the tank which resulted in E37 and aired up the tires to 30 psi. The intake had been getting iced down for about 1 hour. With the intake manifold at below 93 degrees with traction control on I made a pass which resulted in a 12.o2. Even though my times were slower the car felt better with the Nittos at 30 psi. When the water would evaporate off the tires she would grab noticeably harder in second. However, I was having more problems with traction in 1st.

Traction control off!

With TC off I got an 11.8 and a couple 11.92’s. Every launch was between 2000- 2400 since my brakes were holding. I would get 20.xx psi of boost through 1st and 2nd but the boost would drop to 17 psi in 3rd and beyond.

This run is along side a ZL1 Camaro which kinda shows a visual representation of my slow launch, grabbing around 2nd, boost drops in 3rd to 17 psi.

looks like a meth kit is in the future for the SHO. My initial goal was to get the SHO in the 11’s and we’ll, she is!

I also ran the Explorer ST, bone stock, 3/4 tank of 93. I just tried one pass while the SHO was cooling down! Both the SHO and ST were pretty popular at the strip and we met a bunch of nice folks in process.

All-in-all I accomplished my goal of learning how the track works and will go down to San Antonio or Houston next to avoid the water situation. On positive note, the wife wants get the ball rolling on the ST sooner than later!

Congratulations! Welcome to the 11’s club, officially. Going through the water definitely hurt your 60ft times. It sucks it was unavoidable! But you were able to make a bunch of 11 passes, and the fastest run of 11.79 with a 1.8 60ft definitely could been an 11.6 or so if your 60ft was in the mid 1.7’s or high 1.6’s would have been interesting.

I’ve had my best 60ft at 30 psi in those Nitto’s. Although it was bone dry and sunny out that day. I knew you were at 26 psi so I wasn’t sure airing them down even more would be better. One of those things you just have to mess around with. If you air them down too far it can add some roll resistance I believe. Now that I think about it it probably wasn’t good advise since you had to go through the water to air them up. My track offers free air so messing with the air pressure isn’t a big deal.

Congrats on your first track day! It’s addicting and I see very many future track days ahead of you! My first track day I drove through the water until someone told me I shouldn’t haha! Glad I could help you understand how some of the layout of the track is and what you’re supposed to do, as I had to sort of figure it out on my own, I wished someone could have told me what to do and to expect. It’s like you’re supposed to know what to do when you’re there. Lol.

Edit: Lol! So cool that you made it a family outing! Hearing the commentating from your kids....there’s Daddy! And when you took the ST down the track and one of the girls said it was slow! Lmao! Then your wife goes, “Not for long”! Fricken cool man!

That MPH was really low... were you lifting at the finish line or the scoreboard? Sounds like an awesome day with the fam! Not that it matters for testing, but a little tip for next time - leave on the 3rd yellow.

My second pass which was my fastest I did in fact lift kinda early. I wasn’t sure where the 1/4 mile marker was until after that pass.
Towards the end I was leaving on the third yellow. First couple passes I was staring at my rpm to make sure I was launching at 2k lol.

Thanks a ton for answering all my text messages!
Yes, many track days ahead indeed!

Yah I got kick out of the kids roasting me, little savages. I run an 11.79 and my daughter says “ why did daddy go slow Lolol”.

I’d say it was a 50/50 split between male and female drivers to include a pack of ladies from a church group, all in Mustangs! They were fawning over the ST, my wife had them all in the ST checking it out like a car salesman. I think next track day she will run the ST :). She also want’s the ST going fast sooner than later now. It sure would be awesome to see the ST running with all the Hellcats, Vette’s and built Mustangs. This might cut into SHO funds, first word problems lol!

Ahh ok. Can't say I ever looked at my tach at the dragstrip and personally I don't recommend it. You have to get up to stall speed before you can start to make boost, and trying to hold 2000 rpm isn't really accomplishing much. But the brakes won't hold at stall speed (my brakes aren't great so YMMV) so it is a bit of a timing game on the street but works out quite simple at the track. I do it like this:
1. stage.
2. mash that brake pedal to the floor.
3. as soon as first yellow lights up, mash that gas pedal to the floor.
4. as soon as third yellow lights up, release the brake.
5. enjoy the ride!

It's easier, less distracting, and much more consistent. Eyes never left the tree from the time I lit the pre-stage bulbs. I had 0.01s deviation in 1/4 mile times and 0.006s deviation in 60' for the night (four passes). I leave at ~2700 rpm, and 4 to 6 psi boost every time. Give it a try next time and see if it works for you!

I’ll try that technique next time for sure!

I didn’t try launching beyond 2500 on the track. I have tried launching at 2700 on the street and I get a lot of tire spin in 1st. With TC on the front tires spin than all it cuts all power to the wheels for a second.

I got a little sideways on basically every pass, it seemed the harder I launched the more I would slip or slide.

When launching at 2700 do you use TC?

Hmmm maybe my advice is no bueno for you then. Some wheel spin isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. I get torque steer sometimes but I can’t say I’ve ever felt like my car was sliding sideways. For me TC on or off didn’t make any difference. On, yes it would cut some power but not in a way that I really notice or feel until I look at the logs. Off, it would spin more and also hit a drivetrain torque limit at the top of 1st and kinda have a long limpy shift into 2nd. 60’ was the same so I opt to leave the TC on.

Keep in mind too that I only run 12.3’s and my car is bone stock in everything besides the tune, so what I like may not work well when you add 100 HP and all that jazz. But I also 60’ in an identical 1.80s on cheap 500 treadwear tires and full weight and so I know you’ve got more potential with your setup!
