Greetings!

I'd like to swap out the OEM rear 6x9's in my 2015 with something a bit punchier. I found a plethora of knowledge about door speakers, amplifiers and subwoofers, but not much about the rear speakers. Does anyone know how to gain access to the speaker column from the top? It's easy from the trunk, there's only carpet, but that doesn't help because the speakers are screwed from the top. Any advise? Mahalo!

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure you have to take off the rear side panels in order to get the cover off. Once the side trim panels are off the cover just has a few push in clips that pop right out. I think the panels are also clipped in but pretty tight. You’ll have to put the seats down. I thought I had torn rear 6x9’s in the deck lid but it ended up just being the sunshade rattling in the enclosure, so I never actually removed the cover but that’s what I remember from looking it up before

^^^That sounds close to the setup of all taurus sedans since the beginning.

There should be little to no difference in the reg taurus of your year, so if you find a rear speaker replacement video or wrtie up for any Taurus from 2010-now it should be the same method to remove. Make sure you have replacement clips and get it nice and tight to prevent rattle when you replace.

I replaced the rear deck 6x9s, flipped down the rear seats and lifted up the carpet rear deck cover. That gave me enough room to get a socket wrench in there and unscrew the 3 small bolts on each speaker and replace them.

The seats will fold down. The outer seat bolsters have a loop clip thing that you have to undo up and out?? before the top clip slides down and out.

One the side bolsters are out there is 2 10mm? Bolts that hold in the c pillar trim in place beyond the friction clips.

The parcel tray is held in with Styrofoam and velcro. It doesn't come straight up but kinda toward the front on the car and out to clear the sunshade.

Before you replace the speakers, let me give my experience with this a few years ago.

I also wanted what you want - just a bit more hit and low end than it was giving me. I replaced the 6x9s with high end kicker's - not much change at all. I returned them to stock. But I wasn't satisfied that that was ALL there is to it - there had to be something else holding the system back. The Sony system in my 16 Fusion hit A LOT harder than my 15 SHO, and looking at the 6x9 part number - they are the same. At that time I had recently been learning the abilities of Forscan programming - so I started looking at the spreadsheet to see if there was something I could do on the programming side of the audio unit.

Long story short - there was! I can't recall exactly which settings I ended up with - but it involved changing the base vehicle EQ setup in the audio control unit or digital signal processor (I can't remember which one) and I think bypassing the Sony DSP. I guess there's different EQ curves for each vehicle the ACU/DSP is used in, since it is shared between a bunch of models. I programmed each setting on the same song until I found the sound I was looking for. Once I found the right setting, I haven't been disappointed since. It hits just like my fusion did. There really is a lot more power available if you find the right settings to change in Forscan and "trick" the module to thinking it is in a different cabin space.

I apologize for not keeping notes on what I did - but I'm sure if you get over to the forscan taurus forum you can find the spreadsheet and what to change in the audio control unit and digital signal processor. Just one word of caution - BACKUP your original settings before you change anything so that you can fall back if you change something you shouldn't. Ask me how I know :)

This is really interesting. My version of solving this was installing a 12inch sub in the trunk lol. I was really surprised that the “premium” sound system lacked so much bass. I mean my 2014 SEL didn’t sound much different with a base sound system on the low end, and it didn’t even have rear 6x9’s. I’ll have to look more into this! Good find

To properly get to the rear decks you need to remove the back seat almost entirely. But those are never going to give you the bass you want. You can replace the doors with better components and get better bass. But for real boom you are going to want subs.

You can remove the whole rear deck cover without removing the seats. I removed all the rear speakers and privacy shade as it rattled with bass notes.

I agree with the others....the 6x9 free air subs suck. Their freq's are cut by the Sony processor, so simply replacing them with anything else isn't going to help. I added an Exile mono amp (800 watts) and a pair of Kicker 12" subs. This along with replacing ALL the other speakers in the vehicle with quality units, has vastly improved the sound....almost to the level of my former Lexus' Mark Levinson system.

If you remove the rear parcel shelf for any reason, be very careful. My rear power shade no longer works, due to the ever-so-slight deformation that occurred when I removed mine.

My rear shade doesn't work either after replacing the 6x9s!
