I have: A Gen 1 JBL Audio system, current staus: F***ing dead.

I want to install: A Gen 2 JBL audio system.

I have everything out, save the wiring harnesses. Are the gen 1 wiring harnesses compatible/workable with the Gen 2 JBL?

I know the amps are not, which is why they will get replaced with Gen 2 stuff.

I've done this. The harness from the stereo to the amp in the rear is exactly the same.

However, in my opinion, the Gen 2 JBL system is a downgrade in sound quality, but to each their own.

I have no means of comparison because my stereo was dead when I bought the car.

And unfortunately my options for replacing the factory stereo are very limited now that the car is 20 years old.

In any event, thank you everyone! I will start plugging things in and hoping for the best.

Have you narrowed it down to a dead amp? You can always use a later style head unit.

I've got both gen jbl stereos, I find the gen I seems to have more bass, but picks up alternator noise. The gen II has less bass, but seems to never have alternator noise. The gen II systems seem to have a loudness circuit that decreases bass as you turn it up. I tend to like the controls of the gen II decks better though. I also think that for a factory system for their time, they were decent systems. Much better than the Chrysler infinity systems I've dealt with, they have little amps glued to each speaker that like to die.

But you can swap the decks between gens provided you change the main amp as well, the turn on voltage changed between years.

Good to know. I have both decks and both amps, as well as wiring harnesses. If I can just pop the old black amp out and replace that it would make my life a lot easier.
