I think my cams just failed?

It is possible it is original, but the odds are not good at that miles on the clock but no cam welds. Some do survive that long, but it is apparently very rare, with almost all cam sprocket deaths occurring prior to 150k, from the data I have seen.

You can see if the serial number is still on the back head and get an idea maybe of if it is original.

This number here is from my '97 made in late '96.

Sorry to hear the bad news, but the evidence is pretty clear - if you don't weld them it's gonna happen.

I can just about guarantee you there's an engine shop somewhere near you that would have welded them for something in the $100 range if you could do the valve cover removal.

If you know of one in Broward County, FL, let me know. I've been looking for a year now. People that own shops won't let you remove the valve covers on their property (insurance regs) and when I show them pics of welded cams, they look at me like I'm crazy:dribble:

I have 166K on my 1997 SHO without welded cams. Bought the car new and other than normal maintenance and a new tranny have had very few problems.

for the love of god get your cams welded!

If you front cam failed check for valve contact and if there is just replace the head or valves and reinstall it.

That simply means you have thus far been extremely fortunate, but as with all dependence on luck, eventually the well runs dry. If you intend to save the car for long term, you really need to get the cam sprocket welds done as soon as you can.
