A couple miles before mine went. My oil pressure just didn't feel right. Ran kinda slow..funny had just changed the oil to some kendall semi synthetic maybe I should have stuck with the regular castrol gtx....lol

Mine didn't overheat when my front intake cam went.(the one that drives the water pump. I had a fairly nice knock once or twic. I felt it coming but didn't. Shut it off in time. Car is all apart now waiting for me to drop the head of at the machine shop with new seals.

If its not welded expect it to fail. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long. I can't wait to enjoy driving it again.

Driving a Sho is like sex for some reason.

Its not. They are messing with you, I would guess. :) Pinning is a long term tried and true engineering solution for keeping gears from moving on a rotating shaft, and works just fine if done right. However, it is more difficult to do right and more expensive than welding, which any competent welder can do for you quickly and cheaply, so almost everyone welds instead. Back when this was all getting going a decade and more ago, I know of 2-3 people that pinned instead, and they did fine with it and never had any problems.

The failure rate on pinned cams is something like 50%. Nobody knows if it was a case of SHO Shop being incompetent (safe bet), or the design of the cams not being conducive to pinning (also likely). When SHO Shop stopped pinning cams, something like 18 failures had been reported in around 3 dozen sets they had pinned.

Welding isn't the ideal solution, but it does the job and is the least expensive.

Well, both the pinning jobs I know of worked just fine, which is a 100% rate, though neither were done by SHO Shop, so I think you might have a point there. Welding certainly works fine, though, and I think most will agree it is both cheaper and easier. Personally, that I why I went with welding and had it done back when the car had about 60K miles on it. I think it is hard to argue with cheaper and easier, and that is why almost everyone goes that way, rather than there being anything wrong from an engineering sense with pinning.

I just pulled the front valve cover and found the cam that drives the waterpump is slipping. The cam shims are resting against the cam lobes, does this mean my valves are okay?

Should I try aligning the cams and welding before replacing this engine?

I guess the cam will need to be welded before I cam to a compression test?

Mine aren't welded :nut:

140k and going...

How does it feel holding a live hand grenade with the pin pulled in your hand? The fuses can vary - some explode at 3 seconds, some explode at 6... but each and every single one of them will eventually explode if you hold it long enough.

Get your f***ing cams welded.

As you can tell I'm not worried about it. This is not my only car and when they go they go. I did use locktite if that makes you feel any better. I saved this car from the boneyard, and I just killed another deer with it. This car is just my beater.
