I am trying to replace the Crank Sensor, and needing to remove the crank pulley bolt. I have tried to use an impact wrench, and also bump starting it (placing a breaker bar on the bolt then turn the ignition key for a 1/4 second). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried heating it up with a torch? PM me when this job is complete.

Unfortunately I do not have a torch. Someone at the parts store suggested removing some cover on the transmission and inserting a screw driver in by the flywheel to stop the motor from turning. Surely there has to be an easier way.

Do you have another huge breaker bar or even better--a pipe you can slip over the ratchet to give you more leverage? Have you tried soaking the bolt in PB blast or WD-40? My next purchase tool wise besides a compressor/air tools will be a mapp gas torch for stuff like this.

Howdy. I just went through this same thing. I didn't heat up the bolt because of fear of damaging the rubber components of the damper. Although this fear may be false?

I used a six point socket on the crank bolt attached to a 16" (ish) breaker bar and a small bottle jack on the frame rail under the breaker bar handle. Try and position it as far down the bar handle as possible so your not jacking the motor up. Put the car in gear and have someone stand on the brake. This set up was a bit shaky and may take a few attempts as the handle slides off the jack. But it did loosen the bolt.

Good luck.

Never thought of this one! Sounds like a great idea though!

I have never seen the starter bump not work, if the wrench is put on correctly.

On the mtx cars, putting the trans in gear (4th) and putting a large screwdriver in each front brake disk to lock it to the caliper, and then using a long breaker cheater bar will also work.

If you have an atx, youre going to need to take off the starter and put that screwdriver in the flywheel to torque the bolt back on

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I had previously used a 500 lbs torque wrench that did not work. I ended up borrowing a friends 600 lbs torque wrench which ended up breaking the bolt loose. While trying to bump start it, I busted up both a craftman's 19mm 1/2 drive socket, and eventually the craftman ratchet. When I used the breaker bar, the motor would not turn over. The other suggestion of putting the car in gear and have someone stand on the brakes also did not work for me, cause the crank pulley would still turn.
And I do not know how any of you guys could possibly get the crank pulley back on without a torque wrench. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I had a friend that striped his main pully bolt on his sho I welded a 1/8 thick wall tube to the head of the bolt, and welded another pipe to the first one at 90 degrees and after the weld cooled we twisted it out. replace the bolt with a new one and the car was fine.

Only advice I can give. When j-yard pulled my motor they cracked the pulley. I got the bolt out by using a rag in spark plug in salvage yard and piece of long pipe and 1/2" strong arm. I like rest rag in sparkplug hole not the best idea but old motor was junk.
Now to get it out of my motor. At that time motor was on engine stand. I took a borrowed 3/4" air impact wrench, 3/8" air hose and compressor at 135psi. I borrowed from buddy who does bulldozer work. Know anyone like that you can borrow or rent from. Maurice
A crazy idea unknow of cost. Have car ready "everything out of way". Local tire place has mobile truck. They have large impact drivers and air compressor. I would check cost for service fee.

Any particular reason to add this story to a two year old thread?

Umm, Maybe because this thread is about removing crank pulley bolt and this isn't just a story, it's another way to remove said bolt, especially if head is stripped!
