I just got finished putting the crank sensor in my 91 sho and it wont start. Any ideas? I lined up the marks on the timing belt and on the pulleys and on the sheilds. I plugged the DIS back in as well as the crank sensor. What could I have done wrong?? I was hoping to take this car to college with me on wednesday but if I cant figure out whats going on that cant happen. Please help guys.

I take it you only did a front 60k and it cranks but won't fire?

I would start by checking for spark and then fuel. IF you arn't getting any spark then I would say to take another look at the CPS.

I did the cam sensor about a month ago and have been driving it ever since then until I had the time to pull the car apart to do the crank sensor. And yes it will crank and crank and crank but no fire.

When I did my first 60K on mine I messed up installing the crank sensor (don't ask) and mine did the same think. It would turn over fine, but wouldn't start. Checked for spark....none. Re did the crank sensor and it fired right up.

When you said re did it do you mean you just went down there and unscrewed the sensor and screwed it back in??

No, I had not got it gapped right and it was destoyed by the fins on the sprocket. I had to repace it with a new one. Are you getting spark and fuel?

Is the intake ground strap installed correctly so that the DIS can get a ground? If not it will never start. Most common mistake.

Did you line up the crank at 5 oclock or 7 oclock with the line on the belt? If you have it at 7, you have the timing belt on backwards and thats why its not starting, it should be at 5;)

Its at 5 oclock and yes I did reattach the ground. Is there any way I can tell if I am getting spark if I am the only one who is arround to work on her? IE I dont have anyone to crank her while I check to see if there is a spark or not.

I can't think of one. unless you were to place the key in the on position and rig up a starter switch. make sure the car is in neutral/park when you do it though.

pull a plug wire off with a plug in it and lay it on the intake or somewhere where it can ground to, anywhere where you can see while sitting in the car will work.

Is the tach moving when you crank the car? It should be moving at least a little bit when you crank. If it is, you're getting a signal from the CPS. If not, then you know where the problem is.

Double check all your connections, especially upper CPS connection and at the DIS module. I once spent 2 hours trying to track down a no-start condition after a 60k, only to find I hadn't actually plugged the rear harness in fully on the DIS (module was cracked).

When I turn the key to the on position the tach moves to about the 500 spot and it bounces a very very little bit around there when I crank the car. Does that mean I am getting signal from the crank sensor??

I would have to say yes based upon what HunterVf said... make sure your DIS is plugged in and grounded.

Jeremy

logic dictates that if one change you made resulted in the problem, then the change you made is the problem. No need to tear into other things.

Also to ensure proper grounding, make sure the entire upper intake itself is properly seated and fully secured.

Yes, sounds like you're getting a signal a-ok :thumb:

So that's the good news... you don't need to tear back down to the CPS.

Did you ever take the DIS module off the intake for any reason? It's important to have a good contact between the back of the DIS and the intake. Double check the DIS connections to make absolutely sure it's plugged in. Double check the ground strap that connects to the rear intake bracket from the hood.

Let me also tell you what it's probably NOT:

Timing: it should at least try to fire if the timing was off, and if it was way off you'd know right away because it would turn over VERY differently.

Cam sensor: it was running fine for a month before doing the CPS.

If all you did was tear down the side of the motor (leaving the intake, cam covers, plugs and wires all ON the car) to change the CPS, then I'd take a good close look at the DIS module.

Tell us exactly what all you disassembled for the CPS work.

The DIS is brand new. I put it on when I did the cam sensor so it has been on the car for maybe maybe a month. The DIS is properly plugged in and the ground strap is there. I am also getting fuel. Also I used die electric grease between the DIS and the intake so it is making good connection with the intake.
Disassembly
I went about it excately according to the Phoenix SHO guide that is on here. I also changed the timing belt, tensioner, and other belts for the accesories. I essential took the belts off, plastic gaurds off, harmonic balencer, I had to slide the timing belt sprocket back alittle to get the old crank sensor off but other than that that is essentially all I took off. Oh and the upper crossover tube. But other than that thats it. Is there anyway I can check voltage coming out of the CPS to see if it is ok before I tear back into it? I checked for spark and I am not seeing any. Would that be the CPS?
