The lines are only an installation aid. Sure you can install it backwards, but you won't be able to use the lines on the belt.

Since there is a tensioner, there is the possibility to install the belt with slack where it shouldn't be. This will cause your cams to be mis-timed, once you apply the tension. The lines on the belt are not "equi-distant" from each other, so if you use the lines, the belt has to be oriented correctly (so that you can read the belt if you looking at it from above the intake).

How does having the timing belt on backwards make any difference? A belt is a belt right? Can the CPS read the lines on the belt, or something, and that's why it dosn't start? Just curious:munch::) Thanx!!!

THe reference he made to the 5 o' clock vs 7 o' clock positions was refering to the orientation of the crank pulley. If you have the timing belt on with the letters 'right side up' (as in the top of the letters on the engine side, bottom of letters on acc side), then the timing marks on the belt will line up with the crank pulley and cam gears, but the crank pulley will be 'clocked' wrong, and the timing will be so far off that the car will not run.

I did this by mistake, and then searched & found this thread. I had double checked everything, and the belt being on backwards was the only thing I could come up with. Sure enough it worked!!!

FYI, anyone who HASN'T DONE a 60k, something that sounds stupid, might just save you a whole day of your life. Had i searched before hand, i would have done it once and been through with it, rather than having to do the whole job again the next day!!!

Ooo well, now i know:p
