im not a 1/4 mile type guy. i did road racing for a time. and i have yet to drive a car that was as home on that track as my Probe GT
QUOTE]

Now there's a car I'd consider a trade for. I miss my PGT, had the more fun in that car than any other I've owned.

The Gens 1/2 are much easier to own as far as dollars for upkeep. They made like 10 times as many so they show up at the boneyards regularly. Plus the aftermarket tooled up lots of parts for us.

And I think the novelty of the MTX, bolstered seats, and overall handsome style (Ford overdid the ovals and quickly backtracked on the 1996 design) make the Gen 1/2 the ones to own. It helps if you like green, however.

My GenIII may be showing its age, but it's still alot less maintenance than the GenI I used to own. These cars are much better platforms than the earlier models. Less fun, but better in other ways for sure.

Well, I have owned both. The Gen II was faster. It had a great sound from the engine when it opened its secondaries. I loved peoples look when I opened the hood....but... It was creaky, and was in constant need of attention. The Gen III has been very reliable, much better ride, outstanding seats, and the auto is nice in Chicago traffic. It sounds unbelievable with the flow 40's to. But... it is slow. But if I am going out to race, or get a speed fix, that is what the RWD mustangs in my collection are for. All out speed, 84 GT Turbo. Looking good and can hold it's own, 66 289 convertible. It is just a matter of personal choice. With kids and heavy traffic over bumpy roads, Gen III no questions. No kids (Can play more without the responsibilities.), smooth twisty roads, Gen II 5 spd.

Trade your Gen 3 for a Gen 1/2? of like quality?

**** NO!

They're ugly as snot and they sound funny on a GOOD day.

"oh - but they are .001% FASTER than a V8 SHO" - Who said either one was fast?

I wanna go fast, I get in my Truck. (94 Lightning with Blower and Alcohol injection)
I wanna go REALLY fast, I borrow a buddy's Whipple charged 04 Cobra.

I want to drive a comfortable, well appointed, fun car that is peppy? There is no contest between the SHO's - the 3rd gen is in a class by itself. The cars are totally different.

OK. Let me break it down.

Original question "would I trade a nice gen 3 for a comparably nice gen 1 or 2 SHO."

Answer - **** No.

Reason 1 - The gen 1 - 2 SHO's, to me, are nasty looking. The gen 1's look like the bastard child of a 1981 Thunderbird and a 1985 Merkur. The gen 2's look like someone realized what a turd the first ones looked like and tried to clean them up a bit - better - but NOT attractive to me.
The gen 3's on the other hand, to me, are very attractive.
I've driven a Pontiac Aztec, and they are actually good little vehicles. But they are the ugliest thing on the road. If I found one in my driveway one morning I'd push the pig in the street based on looks alone.

Looks - Gen 3 FTW

Reason 2 - V6 cars sound like V6 cars and that will NEVER be able to sound like performance to me. The V6 cars sound lame on a good day to me. On a bad day, they sound like a coffee can full of hornets that someone just swatted.

Sound - Gen 3 - V8 rumble - You can't touch that.

Reason 3 - Virtual tie in a straight line when you look at the big picture of all vehicles out there. Gen 3 gets the nod in the twisties but to me it is a negligible nod. So many things on the road could destroy either car that I can't consider either one a performance sedan anymore.

Performance - Tie - not enough difference to matter to me.

Reason 4 - Overall fit and finish and driving experience. The gen 3 is a much tighter car that makes a better highway cruiser IMO. The gen 1 & 2 chassis is just "sloppier" to me. Takes a little more attention to keep it in it's lane. Gen 3 takes a line and holds it.
The interior is much nicer in the gen 3 to me too.

Driver comfort - gen 3

Serious? Oh yeah.

much better post the second time around.

your forgetting one thing

the driving experiance.

the gen 3 is just a boring car when it comes to spirited driving. the atx steals all your thunder away.
its also not mod friendly. which is a very big factor for me. im a tinker type guy.. im always trying to do something new to my car. its just my nature..
so aside from looks, there really not much you can do to enhance the performance of that car.

however, with the earlier SHO's its a diffrent story. parts are more abundent, they respond well to forced induction and that can be set up to RCR very well.
in fact i just saw that there is a k-sport BB going on.. for either car that a gem of a buy.

thanks for making a better post.

Nonsense. It is a -very- spirited machine, particularly on winding back country roads, and the mods one can make to the suspension make it even better. The engine already is just dandy. And for those that are looks oriented, like it or hate it, it is distinctive.

I think Eric was pretty much on target. A lot of cars have gone through here over the years. Not many have stuck, but the '98 SHO is a keeper for as long as it can be made to keep running for a half decent price.

I think the Gen 2s look the best but im biased and own one. Gen3s look good to me to but have that pregnant jelly bean thing going on. I have entertained buying one from time to time but the thought of spending $800-$1200 right out of the box on cam welding has turned me off to the idea as this is more than I spent on my Gen2.

Gen3 sound FTW!

Gen3 interior and ride FTW!

Welding cams and no MTX FTL!

Gen3 looks meh

Acceleration performance like said above really isnt that different to matter

Gen3 aftermarket support FTL!

Also ive noticed gen3 parts are harder to find and way more expensive just look at gen3 struts.

You want an MTX - make your V8 into one. It's not like it's never been done before.

As far as no aftermarket support for the V8 - make your own parts. There's more than enough suspension and brake parts, and there's always F/I for the engine if you really want power.

Of course, racing went pretty much over to automatics ages ago. And they are so out of control. Perhaps you need a transfusion? ;)

It should be like this.....
We all have our opinions, These performance sedans are a great car be it a gen 1,2,or3. It really is what u are doing with the car, Daily driver, track star, Both? If u want to mod the **** out of it, go with the gen I or II. If u want a slick car with atitude go with the gen three!!:woohoo: At any rate I love my gen three that Eric resurected, it is a pain in the ass sometimes but an all around neat car
