Let me know if not allowd). I got a 2013 ford Taurus SHO.

Backstory. Bought this thing at 110k and it- I replaced the coils and spark plugs as it had developed a miss about 3 months after buying it.

Back to today.

The car has developed a misfire yesterday. Has two codes 1 for o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1 and 1 code for cylinder 3 miss.

Replaced the o2 sensor and it was dry no fuel. And test drove. Car was doing okay after replaced then about 3 miles later it started bucking and eventually misfiring again. Only code now is the misfire on 3.

I swapped coils and miss stayed on cylinder 3. Miss started as an every now and then and now it’s developed into hard miss that’s pretty much always missing now it’s at idle and occasionally when getting on the gas. It’s not always missing but it’s missing more than it’s hitting it seems.

I am kinda stumped on where to go from here as the coils and spark plugs only have about 40k on them (im at 169k now).

There’s no smoking just a strong fuel smell.

Tried wiggling wires while running and nothing changed. Tried swapping coils. Going to likely try a new spark plug tomorrow.

I could use some advice this is my daily and im very tight on money as im out of work for a hand surgery. I’m ultimately at the point of if the spark plug doesn’t fix it im going to go trade it in as I need a car that runs. I love this car but im truly stumped.

When you say you swapped coils, what did you swap them with? And did you only swap coils or plugs too? My wife's Explorer developed a cylinder 3 misfire several months after I changed her coils and plugs with new ones. I swapped the coil and plugs from 3 to 6 and vice versa, since 6 is in the front / more accessible. The misfire moved from cylinder 3 to cylinder 6, so I knew it was the coil or plug. I swapped an old coil to cylinder 6 and the issue went away, so I got that coil replaced under warranty.

Hopefully your issue is that simple.

Replaced with oem coils? change the plug and go from there but, as you know, you can lose your @$$ selling/trading a car that runs like that. Bad situation, sorry man. Can you afford to get a ford knowledgeable tech with a great scan tool to look at wider parameters like ignition and injector drivers. I would also do a compression and maybe leakdown. I know money is tight but what it cost to test vs potential loss might be worth it?? Good luck

A couple questions/thoughts on your misfire.

What were the codes you received and what scan tool or program are you using?

When a cylinder misfire occurs, it can also set a 02 sensor DTC. Not that oxygen sensors can't go bad, it's just that the oxygen sensor is setting a code in addition to the misfire because it's just reporting the news of the misfire, as in too lean or rich.

Many of Ford's Ecoboost engines are harder on plugs, especially being boosted. I recommend plugs at 60K and not Ford's 100K.

If you've swapped a known good coil and plug to cylinder 3, which is located on the back side, known as right bank or bank 1, 3rd from the front on that side, then I would think you have a bad DI fuel injector.

Valvetrain issues could cause this too, but they are very uncommon, aside from excessive carbon build up on the backs of the intake valves.

On IDS you can test all the injector circuits for faults with the FUEL INJ PID of each cylinder, 1 through 6. Also, it can perform a fuel injector flow test. These can help narrow if down to the injector.

Also, you can perform a relative compression test and a power balance test to see if it is cyl 3.

Something on IDS and I would assume on Forscan that some may be unaware of are the PCM PIDS CYL ACCEL 1 through 6. The power balance tests have limitations on RPMS for when a miss is detected. The CYL ACCEL PIDS have no limitation and can show cyl misfires up to any RPM that the engine can reach. This is very helpful for harder accel misfires. When viewing the PID any cylinders that show as going + or - of 1 from a centerline of 0 are a misfire that will be felt.

Having this properly diagnosed is where you'll save money.

Sorry about your health and job issues. God bless.

UPDATE

The car unfortunately has a dead cylinder on 3. And will need a motor. Had to sell it and buy a new car as the cost outweighs keeping it. I already miss it as im just now getting home without it. I appreciate all y’all’s assistance.

did you actually have a compression test performed?
