Ive been thinking about buying these for awhile. but i dont like the idea of having to install a second dimmer switch. can you wire it to the stock dimmer switch? if so, has anyone done it?

If your car has fog lights you can just wire it into the fog light switch. On my 93 thats how i had them and they dimmed with the dimmer and everything. I see a gen1 in your avatar so im not sure if its the same way there. Ive got an 89 so i cant share the glow gauge bliss anymore :(

The gauges i bought off of ebay advised against using the stock dimmer (something about needing a constant voltage to the power supply i think). If you can get away with them dimming via the stock dinner, then why not though. I for one don't mind having the second dimmer for my gauges (i simply taped it under my steering collumn out of site). Sometimes i prefer having the gauges light up brighter than the rest of the dash, or vice versa.

Though I may soon swap the interior of my 89 with with that of a 90, I will still continue to try to work on an 89 gauge cluster retrofit with that of a 90 and above. Once I get the first one done, I will attemp to write up instructions, or even sell it if I do end up swaping my interior. The bandit may just get halo gauges eventualy:)

Bandit will love you if you can make that possible! Id tackle it myself but its my daily driver so im too scared to attempt it unless theres written instructions or something. But whatever you pull off im the first person in line

Mine is a daily driver as well, but thats why im going about it in a "not going to fiddle with it in my car but am going to use spare parts I can work with inside my house where the brutal winter cold cant hurt me" kinda way ;-)

While the group buy would be great, I truly want to update my gauges though. While the SHO 89 gauge cluster is like one of many unique 89 parts, I preffer the more rounded gauge clusters.

You and me both. I dont want to just slap some white on the 89 gauges, i want to rid them altogether. I preferred the cluster in my 93 big time. Oh well, its not a huge issue anymore. Ive kinda grown to like it as weird as that sounds.

The ones on ebay have a built in dimmer, I just wired mine to a light source that comes on with the car. Works great!!

I want to do the exact same swap. Im not sure if the 90 & newer cluster will fit inside the 89 dash or if it will plug up, Im almost willing to tear up my 92 to find out! Let us know what you find out.

You guys take for granted something that '89 cluster allows us to do.. COMPLETELY modify our guages! :naughty: Using a bit of careful cutting, you can install your OWN guages and keep all the surround dummy lights. The surface of the cluster is flat, so it wouldn't take much cutting and mounting to make this work. I plan on running my own tach, speedo (more like a 180mph), fuel, temp, trans temp, and oil#... Imagine a USEFUL cluster!! :thumb:
