So, I finally get around to taking the clutch & tranny out of my 'new' 92 mtx that almost made it home from its purchase a couple months back.... it test drove fine, but about 3 hours later on the interstate, I felt sort of a slip, then about 30 seconds later all **** broke loose.... or in this case, i guess it was the tranny.

I knew the previous owner had just replaced the clutch, so I thought maybe they left something loose and it came apart, but now that i have it apart, the clutch looks ok. However, the tranny housing has several large chunks of aluminum floating around and ofcourse these holes.... (see pic links below).

Can anyone give me an idea if what went wrong? I suppose, rebuilding the tranny in a new housing would be harder to find and do than finding a rebuilt mtx? Thoughts?

I can't seem to see the pics. Are the holes in the differential area, or are they near the clutch. Either way, you need a new transmission. Fortunately, a good condition used trans can be found for under $300.

if looking into the housing at the shaft, most of the damage is lower left arounf the differential. looks like where a shaft might have been...? also an area on the back of the trans... like looking at from wheel well, top left is punched outward.

anyone else not seeing the pics at the link noted?
thanks

Link no worky.

Sounds like your diff pin let go, or, less likely, the car had a Phantom Grip diff. In either case you're gonna need a new tranny. They turn up in junkyards and on ebay fairly regularly. Ebay price for a used tranny is usually around $300.

FWIW, diff pins go when people do too many one-wheel burnouts. The car was likely abused a bit (or a lot), which is pretty common with used SHOs these days.

In the first pic I can't tell whether the diff pin is there or not. Looks like it should be easy to see whether it's in place or not.

Regardless, though, it looks like it's all toast. The case crack at the rear is interesting. Musta been a helluva shock when whatever broke let go.

I would go to a pick a part junkyard. You will have to remove the tranny yourself, but you can save some money. My brother and I got a tranny for $82.50 plus $10 core. The tranny even had a quaife in it.

Been there, done that. Learn from your mistakes. Get a quaife. :thumb:
