I just installed a Autometer water temperature gauge which reads from 100-250 degrees as soon as i turn the car on the needle goes all the way to 250 and after a short minutes pass 250. At the same time the dash gauge reads normal temperature....

did i do something wrong? or did i bought the wrong gauge?

i tap into the factory temp unit sender. should i have used the one that came with Autometer? the factory water temp seams to be working ok?

What Marcel said. Each maufacturer has a different resistance built into their sending unit. All electric guages are just reading the resistance. Some guages say that 27 ohms is equal to 250 degrees, some say that it is equal to 170.

Your AutoMeter guage came with a sending unit and an adapter (probably). Use it and your guage will read whatever temperature your thermostat keeps the coolant at. (Prepositions; a terrible word to end a sentence with.);)

thanks everyone i replaced the sending unit with the one that came with the gauge and everything is fine, i have to disconnect the factory sending unit and cable.
Is this going to give any trouble codes after disconnecting the factory sending unit?

also does anybody knows what my new red line is now on degrees? Car now runs in between 180-210 is that normal?

thanks

You won't get trouble codes since the sending unit only is for the dash guage.

Typical operating temps will be between 180 and 220 F, depending on driving and weather conditions.

I wouldn't be concerned unless it got above 225 or 230. The high speed fans should kick on around 215 or so, so watch for them if you see the temp get to that point. Low speed should kick on around 210.
