I just recently had my ignition cylinder (the place you insert the key) replaced on the 1993 MTX. Now, every time I open the door the bell goes off, key in or no key in. This should not be. Short of pulling the bell's fuse, what can I do to make the bell not go off when thee key's not in?

My Sho has always dinged when the front doors are open, key or no key. I think this was a factory design.

my dings sometimes but if I take the key out in the right place or if I play around with the position of the ignition after the key is out it stops dinging.

I have the same problem. About a year ago I snapped my key in half in my ignition!!! Don't ask how. Only i could pull a stunt like this. So half the key was stuck in the cylinder and I had to shove the other piece in and turn. It took some skill to get it going. But anyway I went to a locksmith and they put a new cylinder in and I have the same problem. Damn its annoying...

there is a small switch that senses when a key is in the ignition, the spring loaded thingy must have broken, making it think there is always a key in there. I wish I could remember how I took my ignition out...

My ignition switch is worn so that you can take the key out before it locks closed - now it will think you still have the key in there, it will ding and you can even start the car without the key!
To make sure it locks, I sometimes turn it without the key until it locks. Now it won't ding and also you can't start it.

Ok I am digging up a really old thread here but I have the opposite happening. I just replaced my ignition cylinder and I have no ding, ding when the key is in and the door is opened which is fine by me. Any ideas to why? I know I said it was fine but just knowing that it doesn’t work as it should bothers me.

there is a black/purple wire that goes to a very small plastic piece with a copper spring in it (all smaller than a fingerprint) that slots into the bottom of the ignition cylinder right on the outer lip. Personally, I #%*$ing hate that dinger, and between the fact that a) I don't need the keys to start the car and can remove the keys while it's running and b) I have a freakin' keypad if I forget my keys, I cut the plastic off the end of the BK/purple wire and taped it. Now, it still dings if I left the headlights on with the door open (useful) and doesn't ding if I left the keys in, cos frankly I don't care.

Hope this helps somebody. If your dinger isn't working, either the wire isn't there, the copper piece broke off, or something else isn't making a connection.

Mine does the same thing just the headlights the rare time i use the switch, very rarely with the key in but i like it that way, its annoying as ****.

That little wire with the metal clips that "clip" or fit on to the ignition probably came loose and it sometimes touches the ignition causing the ding to go off. Mine has the intermittent problem of tilting the wheel up and it dings, tilt it down and it stops. I'm not sure how it stayed put from the factory but I put it back in place when I took my ignition out once and it still does this. I'm weird but I like the ding...sometimes it gets annoying when you're cleaning the car and have the radio on and doors open at the same time.

I think they changed the tone of the dinger in the 90 model with a higher pitched chime than the one in the 89. The 92-95s seem to have an even higher pitch in tone.
