I just put the car together after doing new valve cover gaskets, plugs and wires and new gaskets on the painted intake.
I checked the hoses and wire harness and tried to start the car.

I turn the key, and
the tach needle goes up to 2 and stays there,
the fuel gauge goes all the way to the top eventho its only half full of gas, weird long beep sound coming from the dash and
the hearter vent wont shut off even after pushing off on the climate control.

i tried cranking it over and the starter clicks as if the battery was dead-eventhough its hooked up to a battery charger.

I know the ground strap on the rear left engine bracker is important, and thats on there, the DIS is bolted with all 4 little bolts to the intake. checked the maf, tb and other misc vac hoses and stuff and theyre on there.

The rear left bracked is tightened down on top, but the bottom isnt too tight yet, since its very hard to get and i though of doing after i got the car started.
Also, on the left intake piece where the DIS goes, there is a bracked in the back, but cant get 1 of the bolts to go on there yet.
The only thing i can think of is a bad ground.. but where?
Could i have painted a piece of the intake i shouldnt have? (i sanded the paint off where the rear left bracket touches the intake though)

I have no idea what the heater thing if about nor that long beep from the dash.
I am completely lost, i searched about this type or problem, but most people had the wrong firing order or forgot to get the ground strap that goes to the firewall... but this is just weird. :madflame: :frown:

Any ideas?

sounds like the problem is pointing twords the power source. why was the battery on a charger was it dead? how long was it on the charger before you tried starting it? what setting (amps) was the charger on?

you didn't hook up the charger backwards did you, positive in the terminal twords the front of the car.

turn your head lights on are they bright?

when the computer doesnt have enough power it will do wierd things.

As mentioned, double-check all your ground paths. From the firewall to the intake, to the x-over tube to the DIS. All contact points must be clean, tight, and free of paint. Also check all the other harness connections in that area since it sounds like one may be disconnected, or crimped, or shorted.

Make sure your battery is charged up 100% because that will make a sho act very funny........ i figured it out the hard way on my 89. I thought i messed the starter or silinoid up, but the battery was just low. Otherwise i agree it sounds ground related to me. hope its something simple

thanks for the help everyone

Hey guys.. thanks alot for the help.

It turned out.. it was the battery :bonk:  (well, at least that means i did everything else right  )
I didnt know it would do that kind of weird crap though, i asked my brother minutes after posting the thread and he told me the same thing. So I reconnected the battery, and the car started up fine.

Tonight, i started her up again just to see if the battery had charged, and at first it started, then the revs stumbbled down to about 7 or 800 rpm, but it did a funny idle thing before i did the work on the engine.

Im leaning towards the MAF in need of cleaning. Now all i have left are o2 sensors, and off to emmissions i go. The first time, it failed everything by almost twice the limit.. but hopefully with all the new stuff it will pass.

Anyways.. thanks guys
