Well I really dont know where to start... Not sure if this thread belongs here or in the performance upgrade section. Long story short, I wanna build headers for the V8 SHO. Ive never heard of anyone doing this so I'd appreciate all input thats out there. Being a graduate in engineering, I thought it would be a cool project to spend the summer designing em and the winter building/installing/tuning them...

a good set of questions would include.

1. tubing diameter for primaties?
2. primary length?
3. rpm where power is desired (i would imagine 4500K-6500)

any input is encouraged. any thoughts on gains? the stock manifolds suck the big one.

Yea I think there are about 3 sets running around right now. Get with FPS for the details...

Im not necessarily looking for the "perfect" headers, just something to free up the air flow. As for lengths/diameters, there are several software packages out there that compute stuff like that to at least get you in the ballpark, many of which are free to download. As for flanges, anyone out there have input?

Biggest savings would be in weight I would think. The stock manifolds are 26 lbs IIRC. Otherwise dubious gains. Otherwise you would certainly need a tuner to extract the full potential.

Doug at FPS has some long headers. But they are one offs.

The rear cylinder bank's downpipe is flattened a bit to give clearance and moving space [for the engine]. I'm not sure how much room is there [it's been awhile since I was under my V8 SHO], but something should fit.

As well when I spoke to him he said he had 2,000 plus into them IIRC.

mostly labor, the gains FPS told dmjaros were huge, i'm trying to make him buy a set. 2K isn't really that bad when your talking a 1 off part like that. if people were more willing to buy them production probably wouldent be too much to ask.

I'd be down for a set. You would also have to make or install a custom Y pipe or header collector system.

You need to define huge too. My guess would be 10 hp at best.

JBA was willing to make custom headers for the V6 SHO for $1000. I think you can get a better price.

Good night, that is a **** of a jump right there. I would love to have a set of those. Maybe JBA could make a set that would not require too much of a modification.

i was told over 40 from dave (dave =dmjarosz) who talked to fps over the phone.

I think that is pretty unlikely. The suggestion of 10 hp gain at the most seems more in the right ballpark, considering what others have tried and the results over the years. It seems the initial engineering was pretty well done, so there is just not a lot of gain to be had on the exhaust side.

that is the thinking that took the V6 headers so long to get attention but what was the gains over the stock mtx y-pipe? i think it was around 30whp without tunning

This is not 'thinking', but rather I believe that actual efforts in this area have been made in the past and that the 'gains' have been in the area of losing a few HP to gaining up to 10 or so, but not much past that. If you wish to look into it more closely, I suggest going to the various archives on V8SHO.com.
