Yes. yes. The new expesive diagnostic computer tools are essential for the really modern stuff. It has data from everywhere if the tech knows how to follow it. It could take a backyard wrencher like me forever to figure it out. Hopefully this is finally the answer.

I hope it is as well. And I'm pumped
Because nothing since I've felt this issue has ever made so much sense. The guy who initially diagnosed, actually referred me to the shop down the road as they deal with these things more than them (they are more of a transmission shop) which to me shows that they arent just about the money... but instead helping figure out the issue as I've spent enough teyomg to already.

so annoyed - now they don't think it is either turbos - was suggested throttle body problem but wasn't comfortable replacing. it's getting worse and worse so I know it's only a matter of time before a code or light comes on. I will update!

I could be wrong about both of these and I hope others can correct me. But, I thought that smell was usually I sign of PTU failing, and also I think if the PTU is overheating the the PCM will limit power. Seems plausible at least that this is your situation. I have no personal experience with these problems though.

A vacuum leak can absolutely give you a lose of power. I had a 2004 Cadillac Deville that had that problem - turned out to be a split in a hose that ran under the intake manifold. Let us know how it goes.

Fixed the vacuum leak and didnt really change anything .. however, one of my knock sensor wires is chaffing horribly and exposed while laying on umm whatever it's near that's hot which seems like everything lol so I had it taped just for the day and tomorrow I'm replacing both sensors and intake manifold gasket and something else small... we'll see how it drives today

HELLO PERFORMANCE, oh my lanta.. with the wire just being moved away from the coolant crossover pipe, I have felt the difference immensely over the past few days. Almost like my turbos are working again tho I know they were before lol. I'm replacing both sensors and some other things but the fact that I already feel a substantial difference unlike when I fixed the vacuum leak... just wild. I recommend everyone check the sensor

Hopefully this is the end of the issues. You wrapped the wiring to keep it from happening again right?

Haven't replaced it yet, just wrapped it for a temp bandaid and this weekend replacing it entirely and will for sure to prevent it from happening again!

I was going to buy a SHO until I read this thread!!:smash: Like Daniele, it's been my dream car for a while. A sedan with AWD and great power and a lot of reasonably priced perf parts and tunes. I want something that is dependable and not having dealers throw parts on guessing that it may fix it but it may not!!! ****, I can do that myself! I think you really need to find a mechanic that owns one or use to own one or has just worked on a lot of them so they know a lot about the SHOs and not just throw $700 (aka $1700!) Daniele, did you call around to make sure they didn't jack up the price and book hours for the replacement? I don't think you can not understand what they said by hearing $700 vs $1,700 (seven hundred vs seventeen hundred or one thousand seven hundred).
Are there any years that do not have these trans issues or other issues that are common?

UPDATE. My transmission is entirely fine. I just took it to a local shop instead of the dealership and its a turbo problem. The guy figured it when he used his scan tool while test driving it, I knew there was such a lack of power. He took out the air intake sensor or whatever it is called and it had oil on it - I drop it off tomorrow for a better diagnostic. It all makes sense now.

I just read this and it really ****** me off! I would go back to the dealer and raise serious **** on a Saturday when they're packed and ask them how can a local shop(not a stealership) figure it out right away and not just throw $1,700 parts at it. I had to go to a Buick Dealership on a Saturday afternoon after they repaired my Buick Grand National after it was stolen and then a high-speed chase that ended in the little punks (4 kids 12-14) hitting a curb inlet and chain link fence. The body shop manager and dealership owner said that I was just too picky!! All of the bodywork looked like shit on it. I could have done a better job myself ( I painted a few cars and they looked way better). I had to go off on the owner in the showroom floor, he took his sweet time coming to meet me after I requested that I talk with him. He said he would redo it but at that point, I didn't want the knuckleheads touching my vehicle. Also when I picked up my car wastegate hose had popped off and blew my intake hose off, the dang service tech that worked on it didn't even notice! I took it there thinking they would go through the entire car and fix it, especially since it was an insurance claim that's guaranteed to pay for everything they find. maybe reattaching the wastegate vacuum line and inlet pipe wouldn't pay them much. Since then I've been really leary about going to dealerships. Dealerships are only as good as their employees, they are like doctors, cops and lawyers there are a lot of good ones out there that really take pride in their work and reputation but when you get a bad one it can be very painful to your bank account and emotional health from all of the frustrations. It was back in 1994 with no internet to blast him on all of the review platforms. I ended up having to go to another shop.

I would at the least leave negative feedback on every place you can find, be honest but very stern and explain how incompetent/unknowledgeable they were and just threw a part on there to if it worked or not. I would also mention the bait and switch $700 vs $1,700!!! That ****** me off also. I think they took advantage of you being a woman and not super knowledgeable about the SHO like many of us that are new owners and not a SHO Forum Stud or in your case Studette.

I'm sorry they put you through the frustration and expensive part that was not needing to be replaced. You might want to call the corporate Ford and file a complaint, They may reimburse you, who knows.

I'm having second thoughts about buying a SHO now.

I hear what you're saying regarding shops (or anything) are only as good as their leadership and employee's. Given that, whether you're buying a SHO or a 'vette, or a Benz, make no difference. It's the shop, not the car.

Good luck in your hunt. :)

As a general rule of thumb, I stay way the **** away from stealerships. I know a few guys that work at the local Ford dealership and they are the equivalent of monkeys trying to use a banana as a wrench. Luckily I have a very good shop I go to and get treated right. It's nice that they actually do an inspection instead of just saying they did one on paper.

Local Shops > DIY > Stealership.

I wouldn't let this deter you from getting a SHO. I would suggest you only looking at 2013 and newer, with under 50k miles and one owner AND definitely make sure you get a good extended warranty.

My problem was a horribly chaffing knock sensor wire. I changed out the entire harness and it's like night and day. I do need to replace my flex pipes, which I'm just going to get catted downpipes as soon as I get enough money. But honestly, the car runs amazing now. The vacuum leak I had was for my brake booster and it was a cheap replacement. I did have a leak from my PTU but I replaced the seal and I've had no smells, no leaks - zero issues with regards to that. I am pretty sure that the seal was compromised from the few times I had changed out the fluid since it probably never was before. But like I said, no issues there. I have zero transmission problems.

It was not the greatest to pay ( well I paid $1,400 for my main control because I found a coupon, but it was $1,700 ) and I honestly heard over the phone $700 and would not have said okay to do it had I known it was $1,700 because they couldn't gurantee the fix. I have a feeling that the reason it felt better after they did that, was because they probably touched the sensor wire that was sitting on a coolant pipe ( I think that is what it's called ). It sucks because the transmission expert should have been able to make a better assessment than to just say oh well it has a hard shift from 2nd to 3rd - well thats not super uncommon - especially just in normal drive mode and not sport mode.

Recently someone in the Milwaukee area with a SHO met up with me and took my car for a drive and his SHO is tuned and such and he said he isn't feeling any performance issues what so ever.

Bottom line, I definitely am going to be getting my car tuned (Gearhead) very soon because I've heard how much of a difference it can make and how I will be able to see how my car is operating better than just a regular scanning tool.

Don't let this get you down. I love my car. I will absolutely never take it to a dealership unless I specifically know the tech and specifically know he is familiar with the SHO. But besides my flex pipes needing replacement and some paint / rust issues on my trunk - I have no complaints.

It was a whole bunch of fuckery the past like 8 months prior before replacing my knock sensor harness and such but I am confident in saying that my boats in a good place and you should get a SHO.

Honestly this entire past 8 months or so has been the best learning experience for me with my car. I've learned so much about it and how it works and what to look out for - besides this forum, theres a few Facebook groups that are super helpful too. Dealerships do suck. I think their so called "transmission expert" looked about 25 and when I talked to him after he replaced the main control, he was obviously fairly incompetent. I have a lot of good sources now for issues that may arise in the future. I have now 70k miles and I am experiencing no issues since I changed my knock sensor harness and well knock on wood, lol.

Get a SHO. like i said on the other post, just I would get 2013 as your oldest, under 50k miles with one owner and a good extended warranty. Join facebook groups and you'll find they have a SHO group probably for your state and then you can get to know others close with a SHO and it makes things so much easier.

If I didn't have my stimulus money when I paid for my main control, I would have been more livid. But in hind sight, now I have a new main control so it's not like I totally lost out.

I'm glad you have a great attitude about it. Not sure if it was me, chasing my backside all that time and cutting checks for non fixes, I'd be that cool about it. Been there and done that over the years but still get angry with poor diagnostics.
