My daughter has a 2010 SHO. When she left a roundabout, she heard a grinding noise that went away at her next stop. Thinking it was the road, she let it go. Then it happened again and didn't stop. Out of caution, she had it towed to the mechanic. He says transmission because the noise is coming from the front of the transmission while on the rack. I've been reading PTU can be the problem. Any thoughts? She said it shifts just fine. Video attached.
125,000 and hopefully more to go.

Thanks for any feedback!

2010? Has the PTU ever been serviced? Ford originally said it was "lifetime" fluid. It's since been determined that the fluid should be changed every 30k or so. To make things more difficult, there is no drain plug. So, the fluid must be extracted through the fill hole. My money is on a bad PTU.

Yeah, it's one without a drain plug, go figure. And she's had it "checked" during oil changes and such at a shop and all they offered was a transmission flush. Lesson learned, spend more time listening to people who own 'em.
So far, 2/2 PTU.

Thanks!

I haven't seen alot of aftermarket PTU units with great results so look around for those posts if it needs replacement. Just keep in mind this is a complex awd tt vehicle at almost 17yrs old. Game this out as far as cost over time vs cost of replacement vehicle. It is a weird time in vehicle pricing and reliability.

UPDATE!!!
We had the mechanic send us video of him checking the PTU. Plug was covered in sludge and shavings.
His boss refused only replace the PTU. Wanted 10K to replace whole tranny.
Long story short, we trailered it to a transmission shop, bought our own PTU and we're up and running again! Been driving it without issue, so far.

Thank you everyone that shared their input!!

Glad you got it fixed. Mind if I ask how much for parts and labor?
