Shift kit plus transmission cooler will be the key to a very long lasting transmission.

Trans-go seems to be the way to go as far as shift kit brand.

my car's transmission blew! id call that an emergency! unless this is a regular occasion for sho owners, which seems to be the case.

Your question was not about a transmission emergency, but whether or not to have a shift kit installed during rebuild.

now if you only had 24 hours to decide i could see that being classed as a emergency. and yes tranny failure is somewhat common :( thats why i bought a FPS tranny so i should never have problems again. yes DO get a transgo kit, and just so your aware it is more of a **** upgrade than a shift kit. That means that it will increase durability. Ask the installer to install the stiffest spring for the 1-2 shift, and i say that because if you don't you will never notice a difference in shift firmness. and do install a cooler to match your driving, a small cooler is fine for most people but make sure it is installed BEFORE the radiator not after because the radiator is there to bring the fluid to operating temp weither it be by warming or cooling the fluid. enjoy.

And don't just throw in a new OEM TC. Get one that is fully brazed and upgraded.

thanks for the help guys. i had 2 days to come up with 2 grand, and bring it to the shop! the guys at the trans shop told me they were going to put in a 'precision' TC and NOT the stock oem one, i told them i wanted a shift kit, they said it wasnt a good idea, but if you guys have experience with the trans go shift kit, ill take your words over the shop's. while im dumping money into this SHO pit, is it a good idea to get the valves shimmed at over 100k? (there is no knocking sounds) what else should i look into getting done? the car is starting funny, hesitates when cold. maybe just an intake manifold cleaning?

The Trans Go shift kit is a must on a rebuild. It improves the internal oiling.

I'm sure the intake needs cleaning but the valves seldom need shimming at 100k.

New coils are nice too.

definately do the transgo, but make sure they are willing to perform ALL of the upgrades in the instructions that come with it. its not that involved but it will take a hour or so to do.

edit: sorry i'm not a V8 guy i can't comment on teh running condition but I would reccomend doing any work yourself it will save you a ton of money.

The OEM TC only has around one out of three internal fins brazed. The rest are just crimped. These break loose or flatten out.

Got mine through "http://www.bulkpart.com/" for $350 or so. Also includes a better bushing and clutch.

What does a FPS tranny offer that is so much better than a factory rebuild? I know Doug takes a factory rebuilt, tears it down, and rebuilds it, but what does he install in it? One of these torque converters and a shift kit?

i have no idea what he does, I got fewd up with ripping apart my trannies to find out what was breaking and making the repair so i basicly said I don't want to have any problems with this how much power will it reliably take? he replied 300-350whp I said ok thats where i'll keep it then. i blew 3 stock trannies (V6 ones) on stock power

Nothing really special IMHO. When I had my 97 I had a full rebuild with all new parts, Trans-go shift kit, trans cooler installed for $1,000. Absolutely one of the most rock solid transmissions on a Gen 3 I've ever been in/driven.

Helps to know people.

BTW putting the medium spring in with the Trans-go shift kit you will notice a difference, you don't need to put the harshest spring in. I could EASILY tell the difference between the 97 and the stock 98 trans.

The car is probably worth more as a crispy than it was alive.
