So that threaded piece is the top part of a round plug that is the recessed part of the round opening around the threaded part. If you look just to the 7 oclock position on the outside of the round opening, you see the head of a bolt. That bolt is what holds the plug part (that includes the threaded thing) in the trans. If you look closely, you can see that the plug has a flat on the left side (where the screw I just mentioned is located, to hold it in place). That flat runs up from about 7 oclock to about 11 oclock. You can see the lower part of it, but the upper part is filled with dirt/oil/whatever. This dirt makes it rather difficult to remove that plug, even after you have the retaining bolt out. When I have taken them out, I have nearly always had to make a slide-hammer type of arrangement that I threaded onto the threaded thing on the plug, in order to get it out. Once out and all cleaned up, it goes back in fine. On the outside of that plug, there is an o-ring to seal it. Sometimes they leak there. Yours appears to have enough dirt and crap in the area that it is not likely to be leaking at that spot...

No no extra noise. No difference in driving. My guess is that a peice of a grear came aprat and launched off the flywheel ormaybe a rock? I can see the a small opening to the flywheel possibility somthing bounced in there and shot out the top?. I remember a big bang a few weeks ago before changing axles amd seals. When it happend i was in the process of shifting from second to third. Felt like one of my tires hit a brick. Pulled over and couldnt Find a problem. Until i found the hole. All gears work fine

Usually I see the hole near the bottom of the case. That's odd. You still going to drive it like that?

Iv been driving it for two weeks after that big bang I mentioned. Just been keeping the fluid levels up. Even raced a m3 from a stop before i found out i have a hole in my tranny. Thats why i was curious if it could be somthing els that flew out. Was about 3k rpm when it happened. Maybe chiped a tooth during 2nd to third? and that flew out ? I know. No fixing this just curious what happened.

I mean if theres a way to take a peep inside i would feel better if i could take a look inside and see if it a time bomb or not. I know itll be at least a month before i can get my hands on another tranny not to mention before i put it in. I would need a bunch of parts. Might start biking to work.

I don't know either. I would get a replacement and let it sit until I got it put in---but I don't rely on the SHO to daily drive to get to work and get stuff done. I used to have to sweat it, but these days luckily I don't have make those tough choices

My current SHO is a 93, has only 65k miles, and it still gives me trouble. These cars will make you into a shade tree mechanic
