Does the water pump need to be removed when replacing the timing belt? I was just wondering if I needed to get a water pump gasket. Also do you need a harmonic balancer puller or can you use just a normal pully puller?

Waterpump can stay on.

To remove the pulley you can use a normal puller, just make sure not to damage the threads in the crankshaft.

As said before, the water pump may stay in place if all you are doing is replacing the timing belt. On the other hand, the timing belt should be removed if the water pump is being replaced since there is sure way to prevent from getting coolant on the belt when the water pump is removed.

You can now see the reason for the common practice of replacing other components such as the water pump, crankshaft position sensor and front main seal (also remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley) during the front end 60K/100K service.
