My fuel pump is making a loud mechanical buzzing noise both while the engine is running, and also during the brief time the pump runs after turning the ignition switch on. The strange thing is, if I ground the fuel pump pin at the self-test connector with the engine off, the pump runs and sounds much happier.

Since the pump is original at 182K, I think I'll just replace it, but I'd like to understand what's going on. Any ideas?

Are you serious? 182,000 miles on a fuel pump? That is probably some kind of a record. You would probably be weell served with the installation of a new fuel pump. The 155lph pump can be installed at no cost premium.

It's true, original pump at 182K. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge, but my dying pump could well be the cause of my cold hesitation problem (the TPS checked out OK).

I'll start another thread, but since I'm on a mission to rehabilitate my '90 into a reliable road car, I'd appreciate any suggestions on what other items I should replace just for good measure.
