Usually my '89 starts very quickly. But more and more lately, it takes it a moment to start. It's done it 3 times in the past 2 days. Today the starter made some grinding sound when I started, which was accompanied by one of these long starts. What's up with this? Is the starter going? How much $$$ is that? Thanks!

Sorry to say, yes the starter is going. The motor that controls the bendix (the gear that pushes on the flywheel), is going, that is why you are hearing the grinding noise. The bendix is sticking, which shortly will cause damage to your flywheel unless fixed. You can pick up a starter almost anywhere, I would personally recomend Ford after having some problems with AC Delco crud rebuilds going out on me. Also on your year you need to purchase the starter solinoid seperate. (it is not on the starter). It is about an hour job, pretty easy and straight forward. Just very greasy sense it sits right under the oil filter.

Good Luck,

Eric
