This has been an issue for a while. My car has intermittant starting problems, excessive carnking (sometimes), turn key back, forward, fires right up, starts without problem the first start of the day. I searched the forums and few matches but never a resolution. come on someone must know how to solve this.

It sounds like the fuel return line check valve.
It's not keeping fuel in after you shut off your car hence the long cranking time (The pump has to repressurize the system). Just turn the key but don't start the engine just yet. Let the pump spin a bit then start the car.
A new fuel pump will take care of the problem. Is yours noisy?

Try flooring the gas pedal and cranking when it doesn't want to start.
